Ghostbusters (2016): Average Guy Movie Review

It's fair to say that Paul Feig's Ghostbusters reboot has been shrouded in a mist of controversy since it's announcement only to be hit by a tsunami of hatred. Before I get into the review I'd just like to say that it doesn't matter how much you like the 1984 original, you don't have the right to be a dick to people! Be it a racist dick, a sexist dick or just a general dick! Either on the internet or in person. The fact that Leslie Jones has had to quit Twitter because of bullying and harassment is shameful! As a successful comedian and actress she deserves our respect, getting a starring role in a major Hollywood movie is an incredible achievement. Leslie Jones is by far the best thing about this movie, she steals the show in every scene she's in and I look forward to seeing her in more movies. Ok rant over, let's talk about Ghostbusters. The new crew I've seen the movie twice, once in 3D and once in 4DX. For my thoughts on 4DX click he

4DX – Is it worth it or just a gimmick?

Having watched the promo video what do you think? This week I saw Ghostbusters in 4DX and it definitely made the movie more of a ride. In fact 4DX feels like it was designed to appeal to the roller coaster crowd but will you miss the experience when watching the same movies at home?  When I saw Ghostbusters for the second time I decided to view it in 4DX because I wanted to know what the "environmental effects" did for the movie going experience. If you want to know what I thought of Ghostbusters check out my Average Guy Movie Review . In my honest opinion; right now 4DX is more of a gimmick than an experience. The movement, air bursts, smoke and spraying water were more of a distraction than anything else, all of which felt out of sink with the movie. The effects like the strobe lights went off a split second before whatever they were supposed to augment happened. For example; during a subway scene, the Ghostbusters find a ghost in the tunnel who had been executed

Uncharted: Drake's Depiction

If there's one thing you can almost guarantee about Hollywood it's that it can't make a decent movie adaptation of a video game. I say almost because Michael Fassbender may prove me wrong very soon with Assassin's Creed. But look at the list: Super Mario Bros. Street Fighter Mortal Kombat Wing Commander Lara Croft: Tomb Raider + Cradle of Life Resident Evil + 5 sequels and a possible TV spinoff Doom DOA: Dead or Alive Hitman + Agent 47 Far Cry Max Payne Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Need for Speed Mediocre is a word that springs to mind. Even Warcraft: The Beginning has received mostly negative reviews despite being the highest grossing movie of all time based on a video game. So do I really want to see Nate and Sully hit the big screen? Or would Uncharted fans be better off with them staying in their PlayStations? Before you answer you should consider Tomb Raider; arguably very similar to Uncharted and those movies are terrible! Nate always m

Independence Day: Resurgence: Average Guy Movie Review

The wait is finally over, after twenty years the evil aliens have returned in the sequel to the 1996 smash hit Independence Day. Independence Day: Resurgence is the bigger, badder brother to the original with an estimated $165 million budget, state of the art special effects and a massive ensemble cast made up of new and returning characters. But the question is; was it worth the wait? Earth Space Defence (ESD) Moon Base Twenty years after the "War of 1996" we find the world to be a very different place. Countries have united; utilising alien technology to not only build a better world but also to prepare for future alien attacks. Jeff Goldblum returns as David Levinson who is now the Director of Earth Space Defence (ESD), a global military organisation responsible for protecting the Earth from another alien invasion. President Whitmore (Bill Pullman) after serving two terms in office is retired and still suffereing effects from the alien telepathy. Doctor Brac

The Longest Yard (2005): Average Guy Movie Review

Hollywood's punching bag, Adam Sandler stars in the remake of 1974's The Longest Yard (A.K.A. The Mean Machine). Slated by critics, it still took $47.6 million on its opening weekend, the largest of Sandler's career and became the second highest grossing sports comedy of all time. Sandler's The Waterboy holds the top spot. Disgraced American Football player Paul Crewe (Sandler) finds himself serving three years in prison after a drunken joyride. There he's coerced by the Warden to assist the guards' football team. Crewe suggests a "tune-up" game to boost the guards' confidence. Along with Caretaker (Chris Rock) and former college football star Nate Scarborough (Burt Reynolds - star of the 1974 original), Crewe must recruit and train a team of prisoners. Thanks in part to the guards' efforts to hinder Crewe and his motley bunch, what starts as a "tune-up" game quickly turns into a grudge match of sorts. Maybe it'

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back: Moustache Trailer Reaction

My favourite literary character is returning to the big screen this October, and the first trailer has finally arrived. Jack Reacher: Never Go Back picks up with the nomadic former Military Policeman four years after the first movie. Reacher (Tom Cruise) returns to his old unit to meet the new commanding officer, Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders). On arrival he discovers he's wanted for a 16 year old homicide and Turner has been arrested for espionage. "I don't like being followed" Never Go Back is based on the novel of the same name which is the eighteenth book in the series. In the books the story is part of an arc that spans four books, Reacher first makes contact with Susan Turner in "61 Hours" (book 14); whilst investigating the murder of a police officer and protecting a witness he contacts his old unit looking for information. Speaking to Turner on the phone, Reacher decides he'd like to meet her so he begins making his way to his o

Selma: Average Guy Movie Review

Selma tells the story of Martin Luther King Jnr. and his involvement in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches. The movie stars David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King Jnr., Tom Wilkinson as President Lyndon B. Johnson, Common as James Bevel (the organiser of the marches), Tim Roth as Alabama Governor George Wallace and Carmen Ejogo as Coretta Scott King. Oyelowo's performance is excellent, you can really see how hard he worked to capture King's essence. Not only does Oyelowo sound like King, he brings his gravitas and the weight of his words to the screen. Unfortunately King's speeches had to be rewritten for the movie because the Martin Luther King Jnr. estate had licensed the movie rights to his Civil Rights speeches to Dreamworks and Warner Bros. for an as yet unproduced biopic. Director Ava DuVernay wrote alternative speeches that are said to evoke the historic ones without breaching copyright. Selma has been praised for its accurate depi
