Super 8 Hockey | Average Guy Movie Review

George (Clayton Bury) is an avid player in an adult hockey league. He once had a shot at going pro, but a questionable decision cost him everything. Now he sees a teammate going down a similar path and struggles with how to handle it. Thanks to some clever visual effects this is a short film that definitely lives up to its name, with every scene made to look like it was filmed using a Super 8 camera. The production value on Super 8 Hockey  is rather impressive, including a couple scenes shot on the ice. Although ice hockey isn’t really what this story is about. Nicholas Rousseau and Lori Ann Potts deliver an interesting moral quandary for their star to mull over, and Clayton Bury does a good job playing a man with a lot on his mind. When - if ever - is it ok to do something immoral, or illegal? That’s a question George is forced to answer, between hockey games and working in the family camera store, that is. It’s actually quite relatable watching him try to figure out what to do abou

Black Widow | Average Guy Movie Review

After the events of Captain America: Civil War , Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) is on the run from everybody, and looking to simply disappear. But the arrival of a strange package leads her back to an old life, forcing her to not only consider her future but also to confront her past, and the 'family' she once knew. The word that springs to mind when watching Black Widow  is 'cathartic'. This movie has been a long time coming, desired by both fans and filmmakers alike. After having appeared as a co-star in several solo outings, as well as being part of the team in all of the Avengers movies, both Johansson and Romanoff are more than deserving of a movie to call their own. So the question is; was it worth the wait?  Marvel have taken an interesting approach with this one. Instead of making a straight up prequel/origin story - although it is technically a prequel - we are presented with a more modern story, but one that harkens back to certain pivotal moments in he

The Tomorrow War | Average Guy Movie Review

Christmas 2022, soldiers from the future arrive to warn us of a global conflict that threatens the entire human race. In response, the governments of the world initiate a draft and begin sending waves of troops into the future to fight.  If you're thinking this all sounds kind of like  The Terminator , only in reverse, you wouldn't be far wrong. In fact it seems to draw inspiration from several classic franchises, including  Alien . Even with a slightly different take on the whole time travel thing - don't worry, this isn't like  Avengers: Endgame  -  The Tomorrow War  is a pretty standard sci-fi/action movie. As you can imagine it's all  a bit bleak; alien invasion, human extinction - yep, sounds bleak. But the movie does have a fun side - like every time Sam Richardson picks up a weapon. This is an alien invasion/time travel movie, after all, so if we're not having a little fun, what are we doing here?   All of the usual questions and paradoxes apply as our he

The Ice Road | Average Guy Movie Review

When an explosion traps 26 miners underground at a remote diamond mine in Canada, a risky plan is put together to deliver the equipment needed for the rescue effort. A team of ice road truckers must drive the equipment to the mine along an ice road, and they have only thirty hours before the miners run out of air. But given that it's April, there's a chance that the ice may not be thick enough to hold the rigs and their cargo. Do you ever get the feeling that Liam Neeson enjoys working in really cold environments? The Grey , Cold Pursuit , and now The Ice Road . This would certainly suggest he isn't averse to the idea, anyway. But if you're thinking that this simply sounds like Ice Road Truckers  the movie, you're only half right.  As an action/thriller, however,  The Ice Road  never really manages to be all that thrilling, even with Liam Neeson and Laurence Fishburne headlining.  A movie about a team of truckers battling the elements should make for quite a tense a

Captive State | Average Guy Movie Review

Nine years after an alien invasion, the Earth is under occupation. The invaders have installed a subservient human government in order to keep the population in line, while they strip the planet of its resources. But when a long thought dead resistance group emerges from the ashes with a plan to ignite an uprising, it becomes a race against time for the security services to track them down and prevent the attack. Director Rupert Wyatt ( Rise of the Planet of the Apes / The Gambler ) delivers a different take on the alien invasion movie with Captive State , which couldn't be farther from the likes of Independence Day  and Battle Los Angeles . In fact it looks more like a gritty sci-fi/mystery/thriller, with elements of a police procedural story. At the heart of which is a young man named Gabriel (Ashton Sanders), whose family died at the hands of the invaders. He's simply trying to make enough money to escape the city, but when a job draws him in too deep he lands on William Mul

A Fast Moustache ReWatch | The Fast Saga

The cinemas are open again, which means the new films that we've been waiting a long time to see are finally starting to arrive. One of those is the latest Fast  movie, something I hadn't originally planned to see, but then I figured it's another movie to enjoy on the big screen. Which got me thinking, why not binge the entire franchise before I do. Some of those movies I haven't watched in years. I kinda stole this idea from a journalist with The Guardian; Tim Jonze . He watched all eight of the Fast & Furious movies in 24 hours, and was changed by it. You can find his article here , it makes for a hilarious read. I'm not quite as crazy he is, I did it in about three days.  This all begins - surprisingly enough - where it all started, with The Fast and the Furious . I was in high school when this came out, so obviously I thought it was great; cool cars and lots of fast driving. What's not for a teenager to like? Although, even back then I wasn't cool e

Fast & Furious 9 | Average Guy Movie Review

Old enemies emerge from the shadows forcing the team back into high-octane battle. This time, however, the family will be tested like never before, because the one threatening the world used to be part of that family. Justin Lin returns to the franchise that put him on the map, to helm yet another physics-defying action fest. This time the team face a challenge that hits all too close to home. All families have history, and Dom's is coming back to haunt him, giving us a glimpse at one of the major turning points in his life. One which explains why he holds his family so dear. But between all the new and returning characters, and the intertwining/rejigged plotlines that they bring with them, it's all starting to get a bit jumbled. The timeline is a mess. It doesn't help that the majority  of the new developments - most of which continue the pattern of trying to fix or alter what has gone before - go almost entirely unexplained. Simply put, they've tried to do too much, l
