The Mitchells vs The Machines | Average Guy Movie Review

Katie Mitchell (Abbi Jacobson) is off to college, and she can't wait to be free from her quirky family. But her dad Rick (Danny McBride), mum Linda (Maya Rudolph), and brother Aaron (Mike Rianda) aren't quite so keen to see her go. So when an accident the night before her departure causes tension, Rick decides to cancel Katie's flight so the family can drive her across country in a last ditch effort to save the family bond. Unfortunately for the Mitchells, a tech mogul accidentally starts the robot apocalypse, and this dysfunctional family becomes humanity's last hope for salvation. Have you ever wondered what your smartphone truly thinks of you? Or your tablet, smart TV, computer, or even your Roomba for that matter. Either way, this could be the movie for you. The Mitchells vs The Machines - besides being a very long title - is a hilarious, action-packed, and oddly relatable sci-fi adventure movie. Think of it as like Judgement Day, just a little sleeker, and with ki

Stowaway | Average Guy Movie Review

Shortly after launch, a crew on a mission to Mars are surprised to discover a member of the ground crew aboard their ship, unconscious. What begins as an awkward situation in which the three astronauts must adjust to life with their unexpected new team member, soon becomes a life-threatening situation when the ship is damaged. This is one of those Hollywood situations that hopefully will never happen; one minute you're working, the next you're waking up on a spaceship on its way to Mars. It's strange then that no real time is spent establishing how on Earth - or anywhere else, for that matter - something like this could ever happen. Although it does raise some interesting questions about privatised space travel and oversight. I mean, hopefully space agencies like NASA account for all members of their ground crew before launch. But once you get past the mysterious course of events that lead to this whole mess, or should I say the lack thereof,  Stowaway  develops into an int

Moustache Lockdown Streaming Survival Guide Part 17 | News of the World

When I first heard that Tom Hanks was starring in a movie called 'News of the World', I found myself wondering who Hollywood's nicest actor would be playing in the depiction of a scandal that resulted in a major court case and the shutdown of a national newspaper. Surely not Rupert Murdoch! I certainly didn't expect it to be a western. But that's exactly what it is, and it's now on Netflix, so there's no way it wasn't making it into our Moustache Lockdown Streaming Survival Guide. If you're looking for more ways to stave off the boredom of lockdown, you can always check out the rest of our Lockdown Streaming Survival Guide, which you can find here .  In 1870, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Tom Hanks) - a former Confederate soldier - travels across the country reading the news to the public. On one of his journeys he discovers a crashed wagon and a lost orphan girl, Johanna (Helena Zengel), who has recently been liberated from the Kiowa Indians. When

Moustache Lockdown Streaming Survival Guide Part 15 | The Dig

It's not every day that a movie arrives on Netflix - or on any platform, for that matter - featuring a story that took place just down the road from where you live... well, where I live, anyway. But that is exactly the case with 'The Dig', a movie that explores the excavation of an important Anglo-Saxon burial site on the eve of World War 2. Don't forget to check out the rest of our Lockdown Streaming Survival Guide, which you can find here . In 1939, Edith Pretty (Carey Mulligan) hires local excavator and amateur archaeologist Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes) to investigate a series of possible burial mounds on her property at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk. What they uncover soon draws the attention of the British Museum, and they must fight to maintain control of their discovery. First off, it's important to note that 'The Dig' isn't based on a true story in the usual sense, it's based on the novel that is based on the real event. So as a depiction of a history

Da 5 Bloods | Average Guy Movie Review

Four veterans return to Vietnam to recover the body of their fallen squad leader, Stormin' Norman (Chadwick Boseman)... and the stash of CIA gold they buried with him. But they soon discover that returning is not as easy as it first seemed, and finding the gold might just be the least of their worries. Director Spike Lee delivers another brutal examination of the racial and political climate in the US. This time he's looking at the Vietnam war and its undying legacy, once again proving that not much has changed in the supposed "land of the free". In depicting events, Lee draws inspiration from some classic Vietnam war movies - shooting in some beautiful locations - and despite going a little over the top on the Apocalypse Now references, it does give the movie a level of authenticity. Shooting the flashback scenes in a different aspect ratio, using film available at the time only adds to this. There are times where the plot feels a little convenient (people showing up

Moustache Lockdown Streaming Survival Guide Part 4 | 'After Life 2' & 'Extraction'

With the lockdown proceeding, Netflix has done us all a favour by adding something - two things in fact - to their line up: After Life season 2 and Extraction. Click here to check out the other instalments in our Moustache Lockdown Streaming Survival Guide. Firstly, After Life season 2... Ricky Gervais returns as Tony Johnson, a man struggling to deal with the loss of his wife Lisa to cancer. As well as his grief, Tony must continue to face the crazy people living in his home town of Tambury, mostly through his work as a local journalist - some of whom are his colleagues. Thank god he's still got his dog Brandy to keep him company! Season 2 pretty much picks up where things left off. Tony is doing a little better, he's still got this massive hole in his life, but at least he's not taking it out on those around him. Gervais continues to deliver what is easily the best performance of his career. He is able to be this very sad, depressed person, and yet is

Did We Just Get Confirmation That Bullseye Will Be in Season 3 of Daredevil?

With season 3 of the Marvel/Netflix show set to land later this year, did we just get confirmation of an appearance by one of Daredevil's most notorious enemies? The last time we saw "The Man Without Fear" he woke up in what appeared to be some sort of convent, that is after a building collapsed on top of him. There's no official word as of yet, but if actor Naqam Washington's Instagram post is to be believed, Wilson Bethel - who's currently credited on IMDb as "FBI Agent" throughout season 3 - will actually be playing Bullseye. Washington posted the above picture of himself with Charlie Cox and Wilson Bethel on Instagram with the caption: The boys training hard in the lab! Season 3 of Daredevil going to be crazy! #Daredevil and #Bullseye Could this be some sort of misdirect on the part of Netflix? Maybe, although it's worth noting that images of a crew jacket for Daredevil season 3 appeared online a few months ago, featuring a

Altered Carbon ¦ Average Guy TV Review

In this dystopian future death is avoidable. At the point of death a person's consciousness is downloaded into their "stack" - a microchip built into the vertebrae at the base of the neck - which can then be inserted into a new body or "sleeve". 250 years after his death, Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman) - a man who fought a rebellion against this very way of life - is awoken into Bay City (present day San Francisco) by Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy). Bancroft is one of the oldest and richest men on the planet and he wants Kovacs to investigate a murder, his own. Throughout the course of the investigation, Kovacs will come to blows with the police and the criminal underworld, some of whom may have more of an issue with the sleeve than the man who's occupying it! Altered Carbon is like Blade Runner meets The 6th Day - that Schwarzenegger movie about cloning. It's got the cyberpunk grittiness of Blade Runner, a noir, mystery thriller and the lone
