Crime 101 | Average Guy Movie Review

A meticulous diamond thief (Chris Hemsworth) targets jewellery stores neighbouring the 101 freeway in Los Angeles. In need of some intel for his next job, the thief begins cultivating a relationship with a high end insurance agent (Halle Berry), disappointed with the lack of forward motion in her career. All while the one cop (Mark Ruffalo) who has connected the 101 robberies slowly closes in. I think it's fair to say that Bart Layton's latest crime thriller has some serious Heat vibes. Obviously this works in the movie's favour, even if Crime 101  doesn't quite meet the incredibly high bar set by Michael Mann's classic tale of cops and robbers. But it is still a slick and stylish thriller, that sees Hemsworth's complicated thief steal millions of dollars in diamonds by intentionally avoiding violence. American Animals | Average Guy Movie Review

In 2003, four university students - Warren Lipka (Evan Peters), Spencer Reinhard (Barry Keoghan), Eric Borsuk (Jared Abrahamson) and Chas Allen (Blake Jenner) -  attempted to steal several rare books from the Transylvania University Library in Lexington, Kentucky. American Animals tells the story of the heist, how it was planned and the effect it had on all those caught up in it. Shot like a docu-drama, writer/director Bart Layton has intercut the story with interviews with the key players, as well as their parents, teachers and staff at the library. The cast's genuine performances blend and contrast with the interviews perfectly, in order to give us all the excitement and optimism before the robbery and the clarity of 20/20 hindsight that comes later. What makes this all very interesting is that Layton doesn't try to amalgamate the different perspectives.
