The Batman | Average Guy Movie Review

Only in his second year, a young Batman faces one of his first big challenges when a psychopath with a penchant for riddles begins targeting Gotham City's most powerful, leaving messages for the Batman at every crime scene. Through the course of his investigation, the caped crusader will wade through the city's underworld, teaming up with a cop and a cat burglar along the way. When a character is re-imagined as frequently as Batman there's a danger that things might start to get a little repetitive. As filmmakers run out of places to go, these different iterations inevitably begin to blur. Thankfully however, that is not a fate that has befallen Matt Reeves' The Batman . The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes  director has taken a young caped crusader and inserted him into a gripping mystery thriller, set against the backdrop of a grim and desolate Gotham City. There is something very Se7en -esque to this, as the titular vigilante and his cop best friend try to make a diffe

Wonder Woman 1984 | Average Guy Movie Review

It has been sixty years since Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) left the island of Themyscira to join the world of man, and in that time she has become rather lonely. Now living in Washington DC, she divides her time between working at the Smithsonian and using her powers to help people. But when a strange artifact - one with the power to make our greatest desires a reality - finds its way into the hands of the power-hungry businessman, Max Lord (Pedro Pascal), Diana faces choosing between her own happiness and the fate of the world. After many delays thanks to Covid-19, the release of Wonder Woman 1984 is a welcome relief from our new norm. I considered making this review part of the Moustache Lockdown Streaming Survival Guide, but given that WW84 is still in cinemas - where cinemas are open, anyway - and only available to rent on digital, it didn't really fit with what I've tried to do with the streaming survival guide.  A movie like this really should be seen on the big screen, and a

Zack Snyder’s Justice League | Moustache Teaser Reaction

The first teaser for 'Zack Snyder's Justice League' has landed. Not seen it yet? Check it out below: It's only a quick snippet of the new things to come, but it does have a small reveal. It seems that Diana Prince was doing some research into Darseid, and in the process discovered an ancient painting of the man himself. The clip has a slightly Indiana Jones feel to it, apart from Lex Luthor's ramblings about bells not being un-rung playing over the top. After that we're treated to a shot of the world conquering alien which looks suspiciously like one that featured Steppenwolf in the theatrical cut of Justice League. Other than that, there's not really much to say. Undoubtedly it's just an attempt to keep this interesting project current. But it's good to see that this much whispered about character might actually make an appearance, when we finally get to see Zack Snyder's vision for the Justice League sometime next year. What did you think of th

Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn | Average Guy Movie Review

Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and the Joker have gone their separate ways, and while Harley deals with going solo in her usual calm and controlled fashion, word of the break-up quickly spreads throughout Gotham City. Now every person Harley has wronged, hurt, stolen from or generally pissed off - it's a very long list - is crawling out of the woodwork for some much needed retribution. Top of the list is crime boss Roman Sionis (Ewan McGregor) A.K.A "Black Mask", who wants to carve the little Harlequin into pieces, that is unless she can retrieve something that was stolen from him. It's a job that will find Harley making some new friends along the way... and in some very odd places. After establishing the character within the DCEU - or whatever the hell they're calling it now - in Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn is finally given chance to properly let loose in Birds of Prey. This is Harley's story, as Harley would tell it - a vibrant, co

Shazam! | Average Guy Movie Review

When 14 year old Billy Batson (Asher Angel) is chosen by the wizard Shazam (Djimon Honsou) to be his successor, he is introduced to a mysterious new world, that of being a grown up. In taking on this role Billy is gifted with the ability to transform into a fully grown superhero (Zachary Levi) - one with more than a few super powers. Now he just has to figure out how to use them, luckily his new foster brother Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) is there to help. But while he adapts to life as both a kid and an adult, Billy must also face off against Doctor Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong), a man possessed by a group of demonic creatures - known as the Seven Deadly Sins - who want Billy's new found powers for themselves. Ever since Man of Steel hit cinemas in 2013, there have been complaints surrounding the tone of the DCEU. It was something that this franchise couldn't escape - despite several colourful attempts - until now. Director David F. Sandberg has managed to take that dark

James Gunn in Talks to Direct Suicide Squad 2

According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn is in talks to direct Suicide Squad 2, or The Suicide Squad as it has been titled. The Guardians of the Galaxy director was already brought in to write the script after he was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It seems like a logical step therefore, to bring him on as director. After all, he managed to make one of Marvel's most risky products a major success. Will he be able to do the same for DC's troubled rogues' gallery? 2016's Suicide Squad was the subject of major interest. Thought to be a lighter turn for DC after the doom and gloom of Batman v. Superman, it turned out to be a big disappointment for many. Major re-shoots took the movie in very different direction to what was originally intended, and a lot of fans were unhappy with the Joker being side lined into a much smaller role. It seems Gunn is planning to do something new with Task Force X. The Suicide Squad isn't going to be a direct

Official Response to Henry Cavill Leaving the DCEU

After The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Henry Cavill will not be returning to the role of Superman, fans have been speculating about the future of the role and the DCEU, not to mention future roles that Cavill might take on. But it's possible this report may be more rumour than news. Since the story went viral we have had responses from both Warner Bros. and Cavill's representatives. First Dany Garcia, took to Twitter: Be peaceful, the cape is still in his closet. @wbpictures has been and continues to be our partners as they evolve the DC Universe. Anticipate a WB statement later today.  Not exactly definitive, yes the cape is still in his closet but that doesn't mean he will ever wear it again. And even if he does, it could be years before we see a follow up to 2013's Man of Steel. That's if we ever do with Warner Bros. shaking things up with the DCEU...sorry, Worlds of DC. But as promised, Warner Bros. did release a statement regarding the situati

Henry Cavill is No Longer Superman

According to The Hollywood Reporter Henry Cavill will no longer be playing the role of Superman. It is being said that contract talks - including a Shazam cameo - have broken down due to scheduling conflicts. With Warner Bros. looking to change things up with their comic book movie franchise, the DCEU or DC Extended Universe was recently rebranded as "Worlds of DC". Focus on the Kryptonian front is said to be shifting to a Supergirl origin story, said to feature a teenage version of the heroine. Which would rule Cavill out because - according to DC lore - that would make Superman a toddler.  Regardless of what you call it, in recent years DC has definitely played second fiddle to Marvel, when it comes to movies anyway. Thanks to The Dark Knight, DC held the top spot for quite a while. But with the MCU getting stronger and more popular by the day and the closing of the Nolan Dark Knight Trilogy with the disappointing The Dark Knight Rises, they quickly fell beh

The reviews are in...Wonder Woman is looking good!

Screen Junkies News reported last night that the embargo on social media reaction to Wonder Woman has been lifted and that by all accounts, things are looking good. According to one twitter user; the positive reactions broke twitter! Critics have had very positive things to say: Wonder Woman is the DC movie I've been waiting for. It's exciting, inspiring, funny, and has some truly awe-inspiring action scenes. — Germain Lussier (@GermainLussier) 19 May 2017 Happy to report 'Wonder Woman' is a blast and @GalGadot is fantastic. Her chemistry with Chris Pine is magnetic. Absolutely recommended. pic.twitter.com/VPW4QW3IhM — Steven Weintraub (@colliderfrosty) 19 May 2017 WONDER WOMAN: Easily my favorite DCEU film. Has the humor and heart the franchise so desperately needs. Gadot and Pine are charming as hell. — Kate Erbland (@katerbland) 19 May 2017 I have to admit, when I first read about the Wonder Woman movie I got a 'Captain America:

Is the DC Extended Universe in trouble? Probably not!

2016 is a big year for DC and Warner Brothers, it's the year where they begin to roll out what's being called the "DC Extended Universe", DC's answer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU. But is there a problem with Batman v Superman? It's been three years since Man of Steel hit cinemas, compared to Marvel who get movies out every year and plan to every year up to 2019 this is slow. Granted where Marvel made several origin stories first and then brought the Avengers together DC are using   Batman v Superman to unite the Justice League and open up the DCEU. Now, everything I've seen so far suggests that Batman v Superman is going to be a great movie, hopefully the first of many. However, since its announcement there have been a few issues. First there was the negative reaction to Ben Affleck being cast as Batman, something I covered in a previous post. The second trailer didn't go down well with fans either, many believed it gave away too muc
