X-Men | Moustache ReWatch - Part 2

After a brief hiatus - mainly to go see Deadpool & Wolverine  - I'm back to rewatching the X-Men  movies. As with Part 1  it's a mixed bag of movies, with some legendary highs, some rather unfortunate lows, and very little in between. For every Logan  there's an Apocalypse , I guess. If you missed it, you can find Part 1 of my  X-Men | Moustache ReWatch   here . So Logan survived his little adventure in Japan, only to come face to face with two old friends seeking his help with a coming threat. Cut to a few years later and the world has been ravaged by war, but I don't think that's Logan's fault. Days of Future Past  is certainly one of the more ambitious X-Men  movies, and it pays off. Less of an action movie and more of a thriller, this new adventure puts an interesting new spin on the complicated relationships between all of the mutants, but especially Charles and Erik - all four of them. It might be a little messy, but bringing the two ca...

X-Men | Moustache ReWatch - Part 1

So... Deadpool & Wolverine . They're bringing the X-Men  and many more Fox  characters into the MCU . It is a movie phenomenon of epic proportions, not only seeing the oddball pair finally team up, but seeing them bring one cinematic universe into another. What will that mean for the MCU ? How many of these beloved characters will they bring over, and will they be played by the same actors? Yes and no, I guess. There are many questions surrounding this monumental cinematic event, and some of the answers may still be a long way off. On the bright side, that means there's plenty of time to revisit every movie in Fox's X-Men  franchise, which is exactly what I've done. Way back in the year 2000 Bryan Singer brought the X-Men  to the big screen, and fair to say; it was a bit of a thing. Watching it more than 20 years later, it can feel almost low key, despite the stakes. The humble beginnings of what would become a massive franchise. In that respect it does make a gr...

Deadpool & Wolverine | Average Guy Movie Review

Having given up being Deadpool, Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is a little down on his luck. So when the Time Variance Authority (TVA) come calling with a job offer, the merc with a mouth is all ears. And he has the perfect partner in mind, now he just needs to find him... well, the right "him", anyway. In true Deadpool  tradition, Wade Wilson - along with his new best friend - explodes on to the big screen in another hysterical opening credits sequence, giving you a not so subtle hint of what to expect over the course of his first movie in six years. Yep, that's right. It has finally happened. Deadpool has landed himself a place in a dark corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe , and he's brought everyone's favourite Adamantium clawed mutant with him. Was it worth the wait? Was it worth dragging Hugh Jackman out of X-Men  retirement? HELL YES!!!  It's absolutely fantastic seeing them together finally, and they're dragging the entire Fox-Verse  into this incr...

The Front Runner | Average Guy Movie Review

In 1987 Senator Gary Hart (Hugh Jackman) was the favourite for the Democratic Presidential nomination. That is, until The Miami Herald broke a story about Hart's extramarital affair with Donna Rice (Sara Paxton). This is the story of Hart's presidential campaign and his subsequent fall from grace. Hugh Jackman delivers one of the best performances of his career as the presidential hopeful, bringing charisma and passion to the role...not to mention some very big hair! Unfortunately, despite being very open about his campaign and politics, it would be Hart's refusal to address his personal life and infidelity that would be his downfall. Jackman - who spent a lot of time both with and researching Hart - is able to show all sides of the man flawlessly, including his frustration at having to deal with the scandal. Despite knowing the outcome of the story, Jason Reitman is still able to inject a fair amount of tension into the story. It's interesting to s...

Logan: Average Guy Movie Review

Over the last 17 years, Hugh Jackman has portrayed Logan in nine different movies. It's fair to say that some of the movies didn't impress, however Jackman has always done a brilliant job of bringing the character to life. It seems both poetic and punishing that Wolverine's last ride should also be his best. But it's better to see him go out with a bang rather than watch him try to cling to past glory. Logan is less of a comicbook movie and more a character driven action/adventure/drama. Set in the year 2029, almost all mutants are gone and Logan's healing abilities are diminishing, leaving him in constant pain. With the help of Caliban (Stephen Merchant) - a mutant who can sense other mutants - Logan is caring for an ailing Professor Xavier. The Professor is suffering from a degenerative brain disorder which causes him to have powerful seizures that can be devastating to those around him. The appearance of a woman and her mysterious daughter will force Logan a...

X-Men: Apocalypse: Average Guy Movie Review

The final instalment of the 'First Class' story arc has arrived, Apocalypse is awoken and he's more than slightly pissed off! But to be fair, D.I. Alex Drake (Keeley Hawes) wasn't too impressed when she woke up in the early eighties either (yes I made an Ashes to Ashes reference). Bryan Singer brings us back to the mutant story ten years after the events of Days of Future Past, it's 1983 and human/mutant relations are better after the world saw Mystique save President Nixon. Charles Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters is prospering, Mystique continues to fight for mutant freedom and Magneto has gone into hiding. Apocalypse or En Sabah Nur as he's also known sees himself as a god and means to rule the world. When awoken, he's displeased with what the world has become so he begins to gather his new Horsemen; four of the most powerful mutants whom he makes more powerful.   Oscar Isaac delivers a great performance as the world's first mutan...
