Captain Marvel | Average Guy Movie Review

During a mission for Starforce, Kree warrior 'Vers' (Brie Larson) tracks a group of Skrulls - lead by Talos (Ben Medelsohn) - to Earth circa 1995. There she discovers that they are searching for a hidden device, one that could tip the balance of the war between these two races in the Skrulls' favour. But does 'Vers' have more of a connection to this planet than she first realised? The only person willing to help her find out is a young Agent Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) of S.H.I.E.L.D. Directing team Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck deliver an origin story for what is considered to be the most powerful hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; Carol Danvers - A.K.A. 'Vers', A.K.A. Captain Marvel (Brie Larson). But in order to do it, they have thrown the Marvel Guide to Origin Stories right out the window. When we first meet 'Vers', she already has her powers and no memory of her life before gaining them. Which means the audience gets to discover who s

Robin Hood | Average Guy Movie Review

When Robin of Loxley (Taron Egerton) returns from the Crusades, he finds his home in ruins and the people poverty stricken. It seems that the Sheriff of Nottingham (Ben Mendelsohn) is bleeding the people dry to fund the war for the Holy Land. With the help of his new ally Yahya (Jamie Foxx) - John to his friends - Robin takes on the persona of "The Hood" so that he might relieve the wealthy of their ill-gotten gains to help those more in need and end the war, once and for all. In trying to create a more timeless take on the Robin Hood tale, Otto Bathurst has delivered what looks to be Batman Begins meets The Mask of Zorro. The director was apparently looking to give the movie a unique style that's 1/3 historically accurate, 1/3 contemporary and 1/3 futuristic. At times it was hard to tell if I was looking at a set inspired by Gladiator or Star Wars. Generally the movie does look quite good - although quite unbelievable - and the cinematography can be quite beautif

Ready Player One | Average Guy Movie Review

Steven Spielberg brings Ernest Cline's famous novel to life in his first action-adventure movie since 2011's The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. In 2045 the world has become a desolate, overcrowded place. Many try to escape this reality by entering in to the OASIS, a virtual world where pretty much anything is possible...including climbing Mount Everest with Batman. Before he died, the creator of the OASIS - James Halliday (Mark Rylance) - hid three keys within the world. The first person to collect all three keys and unlock the hidden Easter Egg wins ownership of the OASIS and Halliday's considerable fortune. "Gunters" or Egg Hunters like Parzival (Tye Sheridan) and Art3mis (Olivia Cooke) all have their own reasons for devoting their lives to solving their puzzle. But they're not the only ones searching for the keys to the kingdom, Nolan Sorrento (Ben Medelsohn), CEO of Innovative Online Industries (IOI) has dedicated vast company resource

Darkest Hour | Average Guy Movie Review

Gary Oldman brings one of Britain's most celebrated figures to life in Darkest Hour. Directed by Joe Wright (Atonement) and written by Anthony McCarten (The Theory of Everything), it tells the story of Winston Churchill's first four weeks as Prime Minister. At a time when we stood alone and on the brink of disaster, he would have to deal with the loss of France to the German blitzkrieg, the Dunkirk evacuation, a lack of support from those in his own party as well as King George VI (Ben Mendelsohn) and pressure to reach a peace agreement with Hitler.  The man really was thrown in at the deep end!   Gary Oldman spent a year studying Churchill and his mannerisms, in order to bring the man to life. Over that same year, he worked with special make-up effects artist, Kazuhiro Tsuji (Looper, Hellboy, The Grinch) to develop the incredible make-up and prosthetics that would transform him into the legendary PM.  The prosthetics used to fatten him up weighed half Oldman's bod

Darkest Hour | Moustache Trailer Reaction

The first trailer for Gary Oldman's "Darkest Hour" has arrived. After Brian Cox portrayed Winston Churchill during the build up to D-Day earlier this year, Oldman is now playing the war time leader at the point in which he became Prime Minister. A time when he faced defeat in Europe as well as a German invasion, lack of support from his own party and an unprepared public. If Cox's 'Churchill' was about the man behind the public persona, 'Darkest Hour' looks to be more about the leader as seen by the public. Gary Oldman seems to have slipped into the shoes of the man that led this nation to victory very well. Even in the trailer Oldman's performance is very powerful , throughout the trailer we get to see him deliver some of his famous speeches in rousing fashion. The scene where he screams at Stephen Dillane's 'Viscount Halifax' for interrupting him is almost enough to make the viewer stand to attention! It really is

Rogue One: Average Guy Movie Review

For many, Christmas has come early with the arrival of 2016's most anticipated movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The events described in the opening crawl of A New Hope have been brought to life by British Director Gareth Edwards. Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) is recruited by the Rebel Alliance to find her father Galen (Mads Mikkelsen), the man responsible for designing the Death Star in an attempt to secure a copy of the plans for the super-weapon. Backing her up are a Rebel Intelligence Officer, Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and his reprogrammed Imperial Enforcement Droid, K-2SO (Alan Tudyk), as well as warriors Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) and Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen) and former Imperial Pilot Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed). Ben Mendelsohn plays Orson Krennic, Director of Advanced Weapons Research, the Imperial Officer overseeing construction of the Death Star and the one trying to prevent the theft of the plans. For the first time ever, the word 'prequel' can be applied to a S

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Official Trailer 2

The final trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has landed (watch it below), and what an epic trailer it is! Last year Episode 7 made for a very Merry Christmas indeed and it looks like Disney will deliver the same with Rogue One this year. I'm not going to go on and on, I want you to watch the trailer. But Star Wars looks to be returning to the glory of its heyday, and what a story to do it with. After almost 40 years we will finally see how Princess Lea got hold of the Death Star plans. Clearly a lot of hard work and dedication have been put in to this project and I look forward to seeing the final result. If Rogue One is a success, will we get to see (and I'm paraphrasing here) many Bothans die to bring us the plans for Death Star 2? A little morbid I know but what the hell. Until then enjoy Rogue One's Trailer 2 and get excited for its release in December. Let us know what you think of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story by leaving a comment below or find us on
