Captive State | Average Guy Movie Review

Nine years after an alien invasion, the Earth is under occupation. The invaders have installed a subservient human government in order to keep the population in line, while they strip the planet of its resources. But when a long thought dead resistance group emerges from the ashes with a plan to ignite an uprising, it becomes a race against time for the security services to track them down and prevent the attack. Director Rupert Wyatt ( Rise of the Planet of the Apes / The Gambler ) delivers a different take on the alien invasion movie with Captive State , which couldn't be farther from the likes of Independence Day  and Battle Los Angeles . In fact it looks more like a gritty sci-fi/mystery/thriller, with elements of a police procedural story. At the heart of which is a young man named Gabriel (Ashton Sanders), whose family died at the hands of the invaders. He's simply trying to make enough money to escape the city, but when a job draws him in too deep he lands on William Mul

Godzilla: King of the Monsters | Average Guy Movie Review

The world has changed since the events of Godzilla (2014). Monarch - the agency responsible for locating and studying Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms (M.U.T.O.) AKA 'Titans' - has discovered many new creatures around the world, all of which are in hibernation. But when they start waking up, Godzilla returns to establish order. And the humans are left trying to figure out why this is all happening, before the behemoths take back the planet they once ruled. Michael Dougherty takes over as director for the third instalment of the Monsterverse, and he has gone all out. Compared to the first two movies, the scale of King of the Monsters is off the charts. This is what a big, ridiculous monster movie is supposed to be; big monsters kicking the living shit out of each other, whilst also causing biblical levels of destruction. There's no waiting around for brief glimpses of the monsters this time, they show up early to demand their fair share of screen time. And

The Front Runner | Average Guy Movie Review

In 1987 Senator Gary Hart (Hugh Jackman) was the favourite for the Democratic Presidential nomination. That is, until The Miami Herald broke a story about Hart's extramarital affair with Donna Rice (Sara Paxton). This is the story of Hart's presidential campaign and his subsequent fall from grace. Hugh Jackman delivers one of the best performances of his career as the presidential hopeful, bringing charisma and passion to the role...not to mention some very big hair! Unfortunately, despite being very open about his campaign and politics, it would be Hart's refusal to address his personal life and infidelity that would be his downfall. Jackman - who spent a lot of time both with and researching Hart - is able to show all sides of the man flawlessly, including his frustration at having to deal with the scandal. Despite knowing the outcome of the story, Jason Reitman is still able to inject a fair amount of tension into the story. It's interesting to see a sca
