Following his very separate desires to adapt Thomas Pynchon's Vineland , and to make an action movie, Paul Thomas Anderson has somehow combined the two, and in the process created something quite brilliant. One Battle After Another  is, for the most part, exactly what the title suggests; with many of the movie's main characters battling their way through a series of obstacles and challenges. And yet it is so much more. The movie has a lot to say about immigration policy in present day USA, and battling oppression. But at its heart it is the story of two peoples' fight for survival, and a father's desperate attempts - no matter how comical - to find his daughter. When four suicide bombers are smuggled into the US by one of the Mexican cartels, the President designates these criminal organisations a terrorist threat. In an effort to weaken the cartels' position, CIA Agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) is brought in to start a war between them. Naturally Graver turns to his old ally, lawyer turned sicario Alejandro (Benecio del Toro) for help. The job involves kidnapping Isabela Reyes  (Isabela Moner) , the daughter of one of the cartel leaders, but when things go south Alejandro is forced to choose between his job and the girl. With Denis Villeneuve busy working on Blade Runner 2049, directing duties fell to Stefano Sollima (Gomorrah) who does a brilliant job picking up where Villeneuve left off. After destroying Starkiller Base, what's left of the Resistance is on the run, with a First Order fleet hot on their heels. In an attempt to aid their escape, Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) sends Finn (John Boyega) and Resistance Mechanic Rose (Kelly Marie Tran) on a secret mission. Meanwhile on Ach-To, Rey (Daisy Ridley) attempts to convince Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) to show her the ways of the Force and to join the Resistance in the fight against the First Order. In what is a first for Star Wars (unless you count Rogue One), the story picks up immediately after the events of The Force Awakens. Rey finally gets to hand Luke his father's lightsaber - although she doesn't get quite the response she expects. It's here that Mark Hamill demonstrates his abilities as an actor, for Luke isn't the optimistic Jedi Knight we saw in Episode VI.
