Lee | Average Guy Movie Review

After a successful career as a model, Lee Miller (Kate Winslet) began working behind the camera. During World War 2 she covered life in wartime London and the Blitz for Vogue magazine, before becoming one of the first female war correspondents. She covered the invasion of Europe through France, including the liberation of Paris, and went on to document the Nazi atrocities of the Holocaust. The idea of Kate Winslet portraying a historical figure like Lee Miller is - on the face of it - rather attractive. And unsurprisingly, the veteran actor delivers, with a great performance that portrays both Miller's courage and skill, as well as her vulnerabilities. At the very least the movie gives you a sense of how she was able to be such a trailblazer, and why after the war she struggled so. O ther than that, Lee  falls - disappointingly - into pretty standard biopic territory. Miller's life was certainly interesting, and the movie does reflect that. The problem is it only ever feels lik...

Allied: Average Guy Movie Review

Robert Zemeckis takes us back to one of the golden ages of espionage in this World War 2 drama. Allied tells the story of Max Vatan (Brad Pitt) and Marianne Beausejour (Marion Cotillard), a Canadian spy - working for British Intelligence - and a French Resistance member who fall in love during a mission in Casablanca. After the mission they head to London, where they marry and have a child. Their happiness is soon threatened when Max's superiors inform him that Marianne may be a German spy and is the subject of a "Blue Dye" operation. Now, defying orders, Max must fight to prove his wife's innocence or face executing her himself. Zemeckis has done a great job of recreating the war era, everything looks very authentic. Allied was nominated for the Oscar for Best Costume Design. Filming took place in Grand Canaria and London, both locations look incredible. It's easy to see that Ian Fleming's work was a source of inspiration, which in turn was insp...

Assassin's Creed: Average Guy Movie Review

Well, it has finally happened! Hollywood has actually managed to make a decent adaptation of a video game. It's only taken 24 years! Assassin's Creed sticks fairly close to the story of the first game, to which they've added some tweaks.  Cal Lynch (Michael Fassbender) - a descendent of a secret order of Assassins - is saved from death row by a mysterious corporation known as Abstergo. Their goal, is to find the Apple of Eden, an ancient artefact said to hold the genetic code for free will. Using a machine called the Animus, they plan to unlock the memories of Cal's ancestor, Aguilar - one of the protectors of the Apple - who is believed to know the artefact's location. Much like the video game series, this movie is intended to be the first in a series. It opens up multiple timelines to explore plus the ongoing modern day storyline. The movie is beautifully shot with the sophisticated, sleek present day contrasting with 15th Century Spain (shot ...
