Oppenheimer | Average Guy Movie Review

Christopher Nolan's epic biopic proves to be a beautifully chaotic examination of a brilliant but complicated man. Warts and all, so to speak. Based on the book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer , the story telling jumps back and forth through several periods in history in ways that feel random to show us how Oppenheimer became the "father of the Atomic Bomb", as well as the effect his work at Los Alamos had on him and his eventual fall from grace. And yet somehow it all pieces together perfectly. The movie should feel jumbled, but it unravels the man's story smoothly. It simply flows in a way that makes it as gripping as it is fascinating. But it would be nothing - well, nearly nothing - without the incredible cast that brings this story to life. So much so that t he passions of all those involved at Los Alamos - however misguided - are almost palpable. It  is a mammoth cast, filled with famous names and great talent, it's any

Le Mans '66 | Average Guy Movie Review

Also known as Ford v Ferrari, this is the story of Ford's battle to beat Ferrari at Le Mans. Racing veterans Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and Ken Miles (Christian Bale) are caught in an up-hill struggle with Ford executives, as they spearhead the development of a car that can go head to head with the Italian racing pedigree. Based on the book "Go Like Hell" by A. J. Baime, "Logan" director James Mangold tells the story of one of racing's great rivalries. In the early 1960's, Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts) looked to improve sales by investing in a racing team. But when a deal to purchase Ferrari fell through - resulting in some animosity between Ford and old Enzo Ferrari (Remo Girone) - the man from Michigan was determined to have his revenge, by winning the Ferrari dominated Le Mans 24 hour race. Now you're probably thinking that a story like this is all about the racing, well you'd be half-way right. There are indeed a lot of scenes featurin

Jason Bourne: Average Guy Movie Review

This is probably the hardest review I've written so far. I've been a fan of the Bourne movies ever since The Bourne Identity came out. I am one of the apparent few who not only like The Bourne Legacy but also can't understand why so many others don't like it. So the idea of Matt Damon returning to the role of Bourne after nine years was very exciting. Unfortunately the best way to describe the new movie is underwhelming. I think the problem with Jason Bourne (that's the movie not the man) is, not only does it feel like a rehash of previous movies but it also seems to have lost the realistic feel that the Bourne movies are known for. Click here for the spoiler filled review in which I go over my problems with the movie. Nine years after he disappeared into the East River, Jason Bourne re-emerges in Greece. Drawn out by new questions concerning his past, Bourne must once again go in search of answers while the CIA stop at nothing trying to catch him. This ti

Jason Bourne: Spoiler Review

I don't usually write spoiler filled reviews because I don't see the point. But considering my not so positive review of Jason Bourne, one of the most highly anticipated movies of Summer 2016, I thought it might be worth trying to explain why I reached the verdict I did. If you haven't seen this movie stop reading because there are spoilers ahead. Click here to see the spoiler free review. The movie begins with Bourne in Greece. He's laying low, making money by competing in underground fights and still struggling with his past. He lacks purpose which is making him miserable. Nicky Parsons on the other hand is busy hacking the CIA in order to expose their black ops programs. So far so good. But when Nicky finds something out about Jason's (or should I say David's) past, she heads to Greece to find him. Unfortunately her activities have drawn the attention of CIA Agent Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander), a cyber ops specialist who begins to track her. Using a

Jason Bourne: Moustache Trailer Reaction

July is looking good now that the first Jason Bourne trailer has been released (minus the superbowl spot). In the wake of the financial crisis, Matt Damon returns as the super assassin for the first time in nine years. When the CIA falls victim to a cyber attack Bourne and his ally Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) are somehow linked, what follows is Bourne doing what he does best. First he takes out the people chasing him and then he goes after the ones in charge, including CIA Director Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones).  Paul Greengrass has returned as Director and he looks to be on true form with both an interesting story and intense action unfolding on screen, including a chase through a riot and a literally smashing car chase down the Las Vegas strip. Jeremy Renner's Aaron Cross will not be appearing however he will get a sequel between 2018 and 2020, a Bourne/Cross team up has not been ruled out at this point. Right now I'm just excited to see Jason Bourne back on the sil

The Bourne Reappearance

In a year full of superhero movies: Deadpool Batman v Superman Captain America: Civil War X-MEN: Apocalypse Suicide Squad it's nice to see the return of a super human of a more normal kind. This summer Jason Bourne returns to the big screen in (oddly enough) Jason Bourne. The plot is currently unknown. Our first glimpse comes in the form of a 31 second superbowl spot. However, with a 28th July release date I don't think it'll be long before we see another longer trailer. In terms of plot we know very little. Bourne is still on the move, living in the shadows. In the trailer he says "I remember everything" to which Nicky (Julia Stiles) replies "remembering everything doesn't mean you know everything". But it appears he's still on the run, apparently surviving by competing in underground bare knuckle boxing. When a surveillance photo of him appears on a screen in a government control centre one of the agents (Ato Essandoh) says "t
