Ghost in the Shell: Average Guy Movie Review

Scarlett Johansson stars as the Major in Ghost in the Shell, based on the manga series of the same name. In a world where most humans are cybernetically enhanced, Major is the next step - a human brain in a robotic body. She's part of a counter terrorism team known as Section 9. When Hanka Robotics executives are murdered and their brains hacked, Section 9 find themselves on the trail of a mysterious hacker known as Kuze (Michael Pitt).  Before I get into the review I must point out that I've never seen the 1995 original or any of its sequels/spin-offs, I can't say what has changed and what has been lost in the transition from anime to live action. I do know that the remake borrows story points from across the franchise. To me, Ghost in the Shell feels like Blade Runner meets RoboCop. A cyborg cop policing a dystopian future, hunting robots, cyborgs and humans, all while trying to understand their place in the world. The visuals are very impressive,  Director Rup...

Thor: Ragnarok Teaser Trailer

Check out the trailer below... Finally, we've caught a glimpse of Taika Waititi's vision for the God of Thunder's third solo adventure. The teaser trailer hints at what Thor (and one of his work colleagues) was up to while the rest of the Avengers were falling out back on Earth.   It appears that Asgard falls victim to Hela (Cate Blanchett), who according to Blanchett "has been locked away for millenia getting more and more cross". After seeing Hela destroy Mjolnir, Thor finds himself in the hands of the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) on the planet Sakaar. There he is forced to fight in a gladiatorial arena and one of his opponents is the Hulk. The big green rage monster is said to be more than just...well a big green rage monster like in previous movies. In fact Ruffalo describes him as having "swagger". There are hints at other new characters, including Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Skurge (Karl Urban).  Tom Hiddleston returns as Loki, w...

Kong: Skull Island: Average Guy Movie Review

In recent years, famous Hollywood apes have been making a return to the silver screen. The Planet of The Apes has found new life with a series of prequels, the third of which is released later this year. King Kong was met with positive reviews in Peter Jackson's 2005 remake, but since then has remained dormant. Now, with 2014's Godzilla inspiring a re-imagining of the giant monster franchise (AKA the MonsterVerse), the King has returned. Instead of returning to the 1930's like the original, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts has put a new spin on the story by setting it at the end of the Viet Nam War. Through the use of the new Landsat satellite, an uncharted island has been discovered in the south Pacific. Bill Randa (John Goodman) - a senior official in the government organisation Monarch - believes the island could be home to as yet undiscovered creatures, known as M.U.T.O.s (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms). In order to prove his theory, Randa plans to pi...
