Confess, Fletch | Average Guy Movie Review

Upon arriving in Boston, former investigative reporter Irwin M. Fletcher - AKA Fletch - (Jon Hamm) discovers a dead woman in the house that has been rented for him. He's there in search of stolen art that belongs to his Italian girlfriend (Lorenza Izzo)'s father. Now, in order to find the paintings, Fletch will have to figure out - in his own unique way - why there's a dead woman in his home, and more importantly, who killed her. My initial reaction to the news that Jon Hamm was taking on the role of Fletch, was one of surprise, bordering on shock. Although that may have had more to do with the idea of the tenacious but quirky investigative reporter, made famous by Chevy Chase back in the 80's, returning to the big screen, than Hamm's actual casting. Either way, it did seem strange to try to revive a character so synonymous with Chevy Chase and his whacky, improv style. It would almost be like recasting Indiana Jones or Jim Rockford! However, in reality this couldn&

Top Gun: Maverick | Average Guy Movie Review

It has been more than 30 years since Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) graduated from Top Gun, and he's still pushing the envelope - and his luck. But when the Navy is tasked with a highly dangerous mission inside enemy territory, Mav will face one of his toughest challenges yet; training a new generation of Top Gun graduates to push themselves and their planes to the absolute limit, so they can get the job done. On the face of it Top Gun: Maverick  is your typical sequel. It takes a lot of what we love about its predecessor and rehashes it. And lets face it, that title isn't exactly imaginative. There are even times when it feels like we're working our way through a checklist: flight jacket - check, motorcycle - check, riding motorcycle next to runway as jet takes off - check. They even managed to rehash the awkward meeting on the flight deck of rivals-become-friends. Needless to say, Cruise and his team bet heavily on nostalgia with this one. But i

Top Gun: Maverick | Moustache Teaser Reaction

Wow! This is the gold standard in teaser trailers. Some incredible footage, with a hint or two at a potential story, and just a whisper of that classic soundtrack. If you haven't seen it, you can check out the trailer below. Jospeh Kosinski (Oblivion) looks to be bringing the classic 80's Cold War movie into the 21st Century, and he's taking advantage of all the advanced technology that comes with it. Seeing Tom Cruise in the cockpit of an F/A-18 as it's catapulted across the deck of an aircraft carrier - not to mention the cockpit view of Cruise and the other aircraft in formation with him - looks phenomenal, and it really adds to the excitement and authenticity of the movie. Something that will only serve to immerse the audience in what they're seeing. Top Gun is known for some fantastic aerial photography, and the sequel certainly honours that legacy, with shots of fighter aircraft skimming the desert floor, a river valley and an insane flip over a moun

We Were Soldiers | Average Guy Movie Review | Movierob's Genre Grandeur

For this month's Genre Grandeur on Bestselling/Popular Novel Adaptations I chose to review Randall Wallace's We Were Soldiers. On 14th November 1965, the men of 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, led by Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore landed at LZ X-Ray in the Ia Drang Valley. Immediately surrounded by 2000 soldiers of the North Vietnamese Army (NVA), the Americans fought for three days to defend the landing zone - their only lifeline to the outside world. Based on the book We Were Soldiers Once...and Young by Lt. General Harold G. Moore (Ret.) and Joe Galloway, We Were Soldiers tells the story of the first major battle between US and North Vietnamese forces. "Hollywood got it wrong every damned time", those are the words used by Hal Moore to describe every movie ever made about the Vietnam war. They're the same words that inspired writer/director Randall Wallace (Braveheart) to get this one right.  Rather than attempting to glamorise warfare, Wallace wen

Tag | Average Guy Movie Review

Based on a true story, the movie follows a group of school friends who have been playing the same game of Tag every year during the month of May since 1983. Now, Jerry (Jeremy Renner) - the only member of the group to have never been tagged - plans to quit the game when he gets married at the end of the month. Realising this will be their last chance, Hoagie (Ed Helms) unites the group in a last ditch effort to finally tag him. Along for the ride are Hoagie's wife, the very competitive Anna (Isla Fisher), Jerry's fiancé Susan (Leslie Bibb) and Rebecca Crosby (Annabelle Wallis), a journalist for The Wall Street Journal. As Hoagie and the gang put their plan into action, the mad-cap antics ensue. All of the cast look as if they're having a blast bringing this incredible true story to life. Yes this the Hollywood "heightened" version of the story, but it does clearly demonstrate the perils of such a unique game. Throughout the month, players go about the

Baby Driver | Average Guy Movie Review

Edgar Wright puts his own spin on the heist/getaway movie in his latest outing. Named after the song by Simon and Garfunkel, Baby Driver tells the story of a skilled getaway driver who suffers from tinnitus, to drown out this "hum in the drum", Baby (Ansel Elgort) is constantly listening to music. In fact, the whole movie is set to music, even the gunshots sync with the beat of whatever song is playing. It took Wright 16 years to write this script, and then another 6 to bring it to the big screen. But it's a movie that's well worth the wait! The opening chase alone is incredibly fun to watch, yet intelligent and tense as well. I wouldn't blame someone for thinking there's nothing new to do with a car chase, but I'd definitely encourage them to watch Baby Driver before they make up their mind. Especially considering all of the driving was done practically, no CGI or green screen here. Elgort was allowed to do some of the driving and what he cou
