Free Guy | Average Guy Movie Review

Guy (Ryan Reynolds) is someone who loves his life. He's got his job at the bank, his best friend Buddy (Lil Rel Howery), and a home in the paradise that is Free City. But a chance encounter with the mysterious Molotov Girl (Jodie Comer) leads to a mind-bending discovery; Guy and all his friends are Non-Player Characters (NPC) in an online video game. This causes Guy to seek more from his life, to break free from the monotonous cycle that is his existence. The only problem is; his world is about to be destroyed to make way for Free City 2. Anyone who has ever played an online game like Grand Theft Auto will be able to relate to Free Guy , and even if you haven't you should still have fun with it. Shawn Levy and his team have created this authentic video game experience. One that really captures the insanity of an online world, and the freedom it provides. It embraces that big, silly fun and throws it on to the big screen. The opening sequence features a player (and one of many

Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard | Average Guy Movie Review

While recovering from his last ordeal with Darius Kincaid (Samuel L. Jackson), Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) sees his holiday ruined when Sonia Kincaid (Salma Hayek) shows up, uninvited, and with a legion of armed goons on her tail. Turns out Darius has been kidnapped, and Sonia needs Bryce's help to rescue him. The ensuing calamity puts the trio back on Interpol's radar, and in the crosshairs of crime-lord Aristotle Papadopoulos (Antonio Banderas).  As with most sequels Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard  is bigger, louder and more explodier than its predecessor. In other words it's more of what we like; gunfights, car chases, explosions, and a healthy smattering of bad language. Something - or some things - the hitman, the wife and the bodyguard do very well. Much like in the first movie, Jackson and Reynolds make a perfect buddy comedy duo, a duo that works just as well as a trio, with Hayek bringing a whole new level of insanity to proceedings. She was hilarious in the f

Hobbs and Shaw | Average Guy Movie Review

When a deadly virus goes missing in London, the CIA recruit Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) to retrieve it. But they're not the only ones looking for it, a mysterious organisation has big plans for the virus and have dispatched Brixton Law (Idris Elba) - a cybernetically enhanced superhuman - to find the person who has it and steal it from them. That person is Hattie (Vanessa Kirby), a rogue MI-6 agent who just happens to be Deckard's sister. If these three want to keep the virus out of the wrong hands, they're going to have to learn to work together, that's if they don't kill each other first. When I first heard that a spin-off from Fast and Furious was in the works, my reaction was not positive. I am not a fan of this franchise, I was once but after the first three movies my interest died a very quick death. Then I heard David Leitch was directing - one half of the pair responsible for John Wick and the man behind Atomic Blonde

Pokémon Detective Pikachu | Average Guy Movie Review

When his father Harry is killed in strange circumstances, Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) heads to Rhyme City to handle his affairs. Whilst visiting Harry's apartment, Tim discovers his Dad's Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds), and for some reason he can understand what the little guy is saying. Unfortunately Pikachu doesn't remember what happened to Harry or what he was working on, but he is a world class detective. If anyone can solve this mystery it's Detective Pikachu...and his sidekick Tim. As someone who is not a fan of Pokémon, I went into this fully prepared to be confused about a great deal. But that was not the case. Director Rob Letterman and his team have done a great job of making Pokémon Detective Pikachu appeal to a wider audience. Granted, a cursory knowledge or awareness of Pokémon might help, but it's definitely not required. First and foremost, this is a buddy comedy, one that's been crossed with a murder mystery, set in a Pokémon world - a

Deadpool 2 | Average Guy Movie Review

The Merc with the Mouth is back and this time...he's got a Celine Dion song. When Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) tries to help a troubled young mutant named Russell (Julian Dennison), he's set on a collision course with Thanos, I mean Cable (Josh Brolin) - a time travelling cyborg looking to change the future. In order to protect Russell, Wade will need to assemble the X-Force, a team of colourful individuals, and one guy with a moustache. When I first heard that Tim Miller had left the project due to "creative differences" with Ryan Reynolds, I was more than a bit concerned that a promising new franchise was going the way of Universal's Dark Universe! Said concern started to fade with the announcement that David Leitch - who's work I'm a big fan of - had been hired to replace Miller. And I'm pleased to say he didn't disappoint, having used his considerable experience to create some phenomenal action sequences that fit perfectly with the Deadp

The Hitman's Bodyguard | Average Guy Movie Review

What do you get when two people from opposite sides have to work together? Well you get a buddy comedy of course. When notorious hitman, Darius Kincaid agrees to testify at the Hague against Vladislav Dukhovich (Gary Oldman) - a former dictator charged with crimes against humanity - it's up to his bodyguard, Michael Bryce to get him there. What follows is a mad-cap, explosive road trip across England and Holland as these two natural enemies have to work together in order to survive. The Hitman's Bodyguard may not be revolutionary, but it will have you laughing from start to finish. The reason for this is the chemistry between its two leads. Reynolds' clean cut protection agent and Jackson's rough and ready assassin play off each other beautifully. It's even more amusing when you realise you're essentially watching Nick Fury argue with Deadpool. Patrick Hughes - director of The Expendables III - has managed to find the right balance between story, hu

Deadpool: Average Guy Movie Review

Deadpool has arrived! After a very long wait and a very intense marketing campaign he is here and he has not disappointed! Normally I would write an opening paragraph to introduce the movie, show you the poster and get on with telling you what I thought but it all seems pointless. You know exactly what I'm going to say...it was awesome, in fact I've seen it twice inside a week! The movie has already broken records: Highest grossing February release Highest grossing 'R' rated comic book movie Biggest 'R' rated opening weekend Biggest opening weekend for Twentieth Century Fox Biggest opening of any previous X-Men movie And it's on its way to becoming the highest grossing 'R' rated movie of all time. I know I've said it before; just because a movie makes lots of money doesn't mean it's a good movie but Deadpool really is! Tim Miller delivers a very funny movie with a good story, great actors who give great performances and con
