A Private War | Average Guy Movie Review

'A Private War' tells the story of Marie Colvin (Rosamund Pike), a war correspondent for The Sunday Times who was killed in Syria in 2012. Colvin had a reputation for going where no other journalist would, and staying longer than any other journalist would stay. The movie covers her  life from 2001 and her report on the struggle of the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka - a trip that would cost her an eye - up to her final assignment, covering the Syrian military's bombardment of the besieged city of Homs. It's incredible to see the lengths that war correspondents like Marie Colvin go to in order to cover conflicts, and report on the very human stories coming out of them. Director Matthew Heineman's background as a documentary filmmaker clearly came in handy, as he accurately recreates warzones from across the globe. Paul Conroy, a photographer who worked with Colvin and was with her in Syria when she died (played by Jamie Dornan in the movie), was also there to act

Robin Hood | Average Guy Movie Review

When Robin of Loxley (Taron Egerton) returns from the Crusades, he finds his home in ruins and the people poverty stricken. It seems that the Sheriff of Nottingham (Ben Mendelsohn) is bleeding the people dry to fund the war for the Holy Land. With the help of his new ally Yahya (Jamie Foxx) - John to his friends - Robin takes on the persona of "The Hood" so that he might relieve the wealthy of their ill-gotten gains to help those more in need and end the war, once and for all. In trying to create a more timeless take on the Robin Hood tale, Otto Bathurst has delivered what looks to be Batman Begins meets The Mask of Zorro. The director was apparently looking to give the movie a unique style that's 1/3 historically accurate, 1/3 contemporary and 1/3 futuristic. At times it was hard to tell if I was looking at a set inspired by Gladiator or Star Wars. Generally the movie does look quite good - although quite unbelievable - and the cinematography can be quite beautif

Anthropoid: Average Guy Movie Review

On the 27th May 1942, Jozef Gabcik (Cillian Murphy) and Jan Kubis (Jamie Dornan) put into effect their plan to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich. Heydrich was the architect of the Final Solution, third highest ranking Nazi and head of German forces in occupied Czechoslovakia. Gabcik and Kubis were Czechoslovak agents working for the government in exile. 'Anthropoid', which means "resembling a human being in form" was the operation's codename. It's interesting to note that the agents were trained by British Intelligence. One of the men responsible for training them was Sir Christopher Lee. The movie begins with the two agents parachuting into Czechoslovakia and covers the entire operation, including the bloody aftermath in which 15,000 Czecholslovaks were killed. Anthropoid has been praised for it's historical accuracy.  Shot entirely in Prague, many of the real locations were used.   The assassination scene plays out in real time, accurately depicting
