Spy Game | Average Guy Movie Review | Movierob's Genre Grandeur

For this month's Genre Grandeur on Spy/Espionage movies I have chosen Spy Game. Directed by Tony Scott and starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt, this is a gritty, more realistic spy movie. It's the polar opposite of a James Bond movie. There's no glamour, no gadgets and the type of locations that would make Jason Bourne think twice!  It's 1991, the US and China are working on a trade deal and CIA Agent Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt) has just been caught trying to break someone out of a Chinese Prison. The US Government has just 24 hours to claim him before he is executed. In order to get a handle on the situation, CIA executives bring in Nathan Muir (Robert Redford), Bishop's former boss and mentor to provide deep background on him. But Muir soon realises that the executives are looking for a pretext to justify leaving Bishop to the Chinese. Now he must he call in every asset he has and every favour he's owed in order to save Bishop's life. After a ten

Rampage | Average Guy Movie Review

When three animals - including an albino gorilla named George -  are exposed to a pathogen, their DNA is combined with that of other animals, causing them to mutate into massive animal hybrids. In order to stop them, Primatologist Davis Okoye (Dwayne Johnson), the man responsible for George's care must team up with Geneticist Dr. Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris) and government agent Harvey Russell (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). But to do so, they'll have to contend with the military's attempts to destroy the creatures and a shady corporation responsible trying to cover up their involvement. Now I know what you are thinking, this movie looks really stupid. And you would be right, it's big, stupid, cheesy, over the top nonsense. But despite all that, it's actually quite fun! A lot of that is down to the big man, no not George, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. If anyone else made this movie it would be relegated to the same category as Sharknado and its many sequel

The Misguided | Average Guy Movie Review

When university dropout Levi (Caleb Galati) begins a relationship with Sanja (Jasmine Nibali) - his brother Wendel's (Steven J. Mihaljevich) ex-girlfriend - they plan to leave the city in search of a fresh start. But their plans are threatened when Levi learns of a deadly predicament That Wendel is caught up in. Now Levi faces betraying one of the people he loves in order to save the other. What would you be willing to risk for family? The Misguided is a movie that lives up to its name. Director Shannon Alexander has put together a great cast whose convincing performances help keep this intriguing story grounded in reality. It's an interesting look at the difficult bond that can hold families together, or tear them apart. All of the main characters seem to be lost souls, going nowhere fast. No matter what they do to try and improve their situation, something always seems to get in the way. More often than not, that something turns out to be themselves! As you can i

Ready Player One | Average Guy Movie Review

Steven Spielberg brings Ernest Cline's famous novel to life in his first action-adventure movie since 2011's The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn. In 2045 the world has become a desolate, overcrowded place. Many try to escape this reality by entering in to the OASIS, a virtual world where pretty much anything is possible...including climbing Mount Everest with Batman. Before he died, the creator of the OASIS - James Halliday (Mark Rylance) - hid three keys within the world. The first person to collect all three keys and unlock the hidden Easter Egg wins ownership of the OASIS and Halliday's considerable fortune. "Gunters" or Egg Hunters like Parzival (Tye Sheridan) and Art3mis (Olivia Cooke) all have their own reasons for devoting their lives to solving their puzzle. But they're not the only ones searching for the keys to the kingdom, Nolan Sorrento (Ben Medelsohn), CEO of Innovative Online Industries (IOI) has dedicated vast company resource
