The Gray Man | Average Guy Movie Review

A CIA assassin codenamed 'Six' (Ryan Gosling) becomes the subject of a global manhunt when his latest target hands him an item containing information that's rather compromising for certain agency officials. In order to retrieve the item said officials offer Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans) - a former operative and all around deranged lunatic - unlimited means to hunt Six down. The Russo brothers have delivered all-out action insanity with The Gray Man . Ryan Gosling and Ana de Armas at their arse-kicking best. Chris Evans as the moustache twirling villain (you know he's evil because he wears shoes with no socks!). Jessica Henwick and Billy Bob Thornton in supporting roles and pretty much non-stop carnage across half the globe. Moreover, the movie is unapologetic in its delivery of action scene after action scene without explanation or the opportunity to catch breath. This is Saturday night action movie viewing at its finest... or at least it should be. For some reason The Gra

First Man | Average Guy Movie Review

A look at the life and career of Neil Armstrong. The story follows the astronaut and his involvement in the space race, during the 1960's, as NASA works to put a man on the moon. Damien Chazelle re-teams with his La La Land star Ryan Gosling to tell the story of one of the world's most famous astronauts. Rather than focusing on the job Armstrong did at NASA, Chazelle chooses to look more at the man himself. It's a bold choice given that you could easily make a movie solely about the Apollo 11 mission. The moon landing itself only takes up a very small part of the movie. But it's a gamble that pays off, when you watch First Man you realise how little you actually know about the man. After a heart-stopping opening involving the X-15 rocket plane, we're brought crashing back down to Earth, as Neil and his family deal with tragedy at home. A tragedy that will affect Neil more - it seems - than the dangers of his work. Gosling is the perfect choice to play A

Blade Runner 2049 | Average Guy Movie Review

After 30 years, we return to the world of Blade Runner. A lot has changed since Deckard (Harrison Ford) and Rachael (Sean Young) went on the run. Life on Earth has got a lot worse for those who can't afford to leave for the outer colonies. The new breed of Blade Runner - like Ryan Gosling's 'Officer K' - continue to hunt replicants, specifically the Nexus 8, a model with a longer lifespan and the last remnants of the now bankrupt Tyrell Corporation. On a routine assignment K uncovers a mystery that'll lead him to Deckard and draw the attention of Neander Wallace (Jared Leto). Wallace, the father of a new generation of replicants, wants something he believes Deckard has and will stop at nothing to get it. Before watching Blade Runner 2049 it's worth watching the three prequel shorts. They provide some history of the period between 2019 and 2049. Click here to view them on YouTube. Denis Villeneuve has done a magnificent job of recreating the wor

The Replicant Debate

With Blade Runner 2049 fast approaching and Harrison Ford returning to yet another of his most famous roles, an old debate is once again being refueled. Is Rick Deckard a replicant? If you look to those responsible for creating this definitive piece of sci-fi, you'll get different answers. In the original book by Philip K. Dick (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?) Deckard is human. Ridley Scott is convinced he's a replicant, whereas Harrison Ford argues that Deckard is human. Hampton Fancher, the original screenwriter would prefer the answer remain ambiguous.  In the original cut of Blade Runner it was unclear as to whether he was or wasn't, however the Director's Cut and Final Cut - thanks to Ridley - indicate that he is. The evidence is still ambiguous in places, but it's there: There's no mention of Deckard's life between stints as a Blade Runner, except for his failed marriage. Deckard's apartment is full of photos

BLADE RUNNER 2049 | Moustache Trailer Reaction

We have another trailer for Blade Runner 2049. Once again it's filled with interesting characters, absolutely stunning visuals and a lot of mystery. As much as we get to see more of the world first seen 35 years ago, and a lot of work has been done to authentically recreate this dystopian Los Angeles, once again we are left with more questions than answers! Front and centre is Ryan Gosling's 'K' and his investigation, what he's investigating we don't know. It involves his search for Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), who - for some reason - has been on the run for 30 years. This search may or may not be the reason K crosses path with Dave Bautista, an encounter that results in a broken wall. One person who's not happy with what K is doing is his boss, played by Robin Wright, she's convinced that his actions could start a war. But how does Joi (Ana De Armas) figure into things? Is she K's connection to the Tyrell Corporation or just someone ca

Blade Runner 2049: Moustache Trailer Reaction

The Christmas period saw the release of two trailers that make 2017 a big year for Ridley Scott. The legendary film maker is returning to two genre defining universes that he helped to create. Firstly with Alien: Covenant, the follow up to 2012's Prometheus, in which Scott will continue to chart the creation of the 'Xenomorph'. As a fan of the Alien movies I was very excited about Prometheus, which upon viewing I found to be very underwhelming. I shall reserve judgement on Alien: Covenant for now, but given how good the Alien movies are (the first two at least) do we really need another prequel? Or are we drifting into Star Wars prequel territory? The second trailer is for Blade Runner 2049, Scott handed directing duties to Denis Villeneuve in order to make Alien: Covenant however he's still on board as a Producer. Set thirty years after Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) disappeared, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling) makes a discovery that sends him in search of the missing B

The Nice Guys: Average Guy Movie Review

The King of buddy comedies, Shane Black, is back. His latest movie, The Nice Guys follows Private Investigator Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and Enforcer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) in their attempts to find a missing girl called Amelia (Margaret Qualley), who's somehow linked to the death of porn star Misty Mountains (Murielle Telio). As with the other buddy comedies written by Black like Lethal Weapon and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, the movie is reliant on the relationship between the two leads and The Nice Guys doesn't disappoint! Crowe and Gosling work very well together, not only are they believable in the portrayal of their respective characters, their antics are also highly amusing. If you didn't know better you'd think Crowe was reprising his role of Bud White from L.A. Confidential. Oddly enough, this is the first time Crowe and Basinger have worked together since L.A. Confidential. Gosling's character shares traits with characters from Black's past p

The Nice Guys

In 2005 Shane Black released his directorial debut Kiss Kiss Bang Bang; the story of a thief (Robert Downey Jnr), a Private Detective (Val Kilmer) and a failed actress (Michelle Monaghan) caught up in a murder conspiracy in modern day Hollywood. Despite doing well at Cannes it got a limited release and just made back its budget at the box office. Today, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a cult classic but it's unlikely we'll ever see Harry, Gay Perry and Harmony get a sequel. But we may get something close to it. This June sees the release of Shane Black's The Nice Guys starring Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe and Kim Basinger. Set in 1970's Los Angeles; Private Investigator Holland March (Gosling) and Enforcer Jackson Healey (Crowe) are hired to find Basinger's missing daughter Amelia (Margaret Qualley) while at the same time investigating the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. During the course of their investigation they stumble into a criminal conspiracy wh
