X-Men: Dark Phoenix | Average Guy Movie Review

During a mission to save the crew of a damaged space shuttle, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) is exposed to an immense cosmic energy, one that probably should have killed her. Instead it amplifies her abilities, to the point where she no longer has full control. With people getting hurt, the X-Men have no choice but to step in. But with a secretive alien race - led by the mysterious 'Vuk' (Jessica Chastain) - looking to control Jean and her new found power, will her friends be able to save her before it's too late? Sophie Turner's Jean Grey takes centre stage as Simon Kinberg and Fox take a second crack at turning the Dark Phoenix saga into a movie. I think it's fair to say that X-Men: Dark Phoenix is a lot better than The Last Stand...not that that's saying much. With The Last Stand they made the mistake of relegating the Dark Phoenix storyline to a subplot, at least this time it's *the* story. Interestingly enough history has repeated itself. Twice Bryan

A Private War | Average Guy Movie Review

'A Private War' tells the story of Marie Colvin (Rosamund Pike), a war correspondent for The Sunday Times who was killed in Syria in 2012. Colvin had a reputation for going where no other journalist would, and staying longer than any other journalist would stay. The movie covers her  life from 2001 and her report on the struggle of the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka - a trip that would cost her an eye - up to her final assignment, covering the Syrian military's bombardment of the besieged city of Homs. It's incredible to see the lengths that war correspondents like Marie Colvin go to in order to cover conflicts, and report on the very human stories coming out of them. Director Matthew Heineman's background as a documentary filmmaker clearly came in handy, as he accurately recreates warzones from across the globe. Paul Conroy, a photographer who worked with Colvin and was with her in Syria when she died (played by Jamie Dornan in the movie), was also there to act

Rambo: Last Blood | Moustache Teaser Reaction

The first teaser trailer for Rambo: Last Blood has hit the internet, and as expected it looks to be a dark, brooding and bloody affair, with plenty of explosive action to go with it. Directed by Adrian Grunberg (Get the Gringo AKA How I Spent My Summer Vacation), this time Rambo is taking on a Mexican cartel as he tries to help a friend whose daughter has been kidnapped. Haven't seen the trailer yet? Check it out below: As usual, Rambo is seeking peace whilst also preparing for war. We all know that no matter how much he wants to avoid it, for Rambo there's always a battle to be fought, including with his inner demons. We get the usual inner monologue as the camera pans over a few mementoes, including his home made knife from 'Rambo' and a modest (ha-ha) collection of guns. There's also a shot of Rambo visiting a grave, I wonder, when he went home at the end of the last movie, did he make it in time to see his family? That's the thing, we

Captain Britain and Deadpool in the MCU

Who - and I'm talking to the British readers here - would like to see a British Marvel superhero enter the MCU? Granted there have already been two British characters of note in Marvel movies, but Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) is very much retired, and James Montgomery Falsworth (JJ Feild) hasn't been seen since the end of World War 2. Maybe it's time for a British superhero. We Got This Covered is reporting that a source has confirmed Marvel plans to introduce Captain Britain into the MCU at some point during Phase 4.  Brian Braddock was a scientist working at the Darkmoor nuclear research centre. During an attack on the facility, Braddock went for help but crashed his motorcycle. Badly injured, Braddock was visited by the Omniversal Guardian who gave him the choice to become a superhero. By making the right choice, Braddock became Captain Britain and is gifted with several powers including superhuman strength, speed, stamina, durability, reflexes, senses and sup

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum | Average Guy Movie Review

After killing a member of the High Table on Continental grounds, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) once again finds himself on the run with a price on his head. But he's not the only one paying for his actions, an Adjudicator (Asia Kate Dillon) has been dispatched by the High Table to punish those who aided him. Will John be able to make things right before he drowns in the bloodbath he started over his car and his dog? If anyone can, it's Baba Yaga himself! With the action kicking off pretty much where Chapter 2 left things, we're seeing a different side to John Wick. Over the course of the last two movies we've seen him utilise every asset he has available to him, carefully planning and executing his missions, now he's very much alone...and improvising. For him it's a nightmare, trapped in a city filled with rival assassins, all looking to claim that $14 million bounty. But for us, it's delicious carnage as Wick literally kills his way through a multitude

Pokémon Detective Pikachu | Average Guy Movie Review

When his father Harry is killed in strange circumstances, Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) heads to Rhyme City to handle his affairs. Whilst visiting Harry's apartment, Tim discovers his Dad's Pikachu (voiced by Ryan Reynolds), and for some reason he can understand what the little guy is saying. Unfortunately Pikachu doesn't remember what happened to Harry or what he was working on, but he is a world class detective. If anyone can solve this mystery it's Detective Pikachu...and his sidekick Tim. As someone who is not a fan of Pokémon, I went into this fully prepared to be confused about a great deal. But that was not the case. Director Rob Letterman and his team have done a great job of making Pokémon Detective Pikachu appeal to a wider audience. Granted, a cursory knowledge or awareness of Pokémon might help, but it's definitely not required. First and foremost, this is a buddy comedy, one that's been crossed with a murder mystery, set in a Pokémon world - a

Long Shot | Average Guy Movie Review

Recently unemployed journalist Fred Flarsky (Seth Rogen) stumbles into a new line of work after a chance accident reunites him with his former babysitter, Charlotte Field (Charlize Theron). As the US Secretary of State, Charlotte is promoting a bill designed to encourage more environmentally friendly practices the world over. She is also preparing to run for President in the coming election, and she hires Flarsky to be a speech writer on her team, much to the chagrin of her advisors. But when sparks begin to fly between this odd couple, and politics and personal feelings begin to mix, could everything Charlotte has worked for come crashing down? Director Jonathan Levine delivers a colourful look at politics with Long Shot. This is an idealistic view of politics, one in which politicians - some at least - actually care about the work they're doing, beyond the usual approval ratings and expense claims. We will never see a politician like this, they'd either bend to the s
