Doctor Strange
The teaser trailer for Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange has arrived, and what does it tell us? Not a lot really, it's more about intrigue and the scale and spectacle. I know a teaser trailer is only supposed to provide small pieces of information, I've said this myself enough times, but I think they took the word snippet and ran with it! Maybe the creators wanted the trailer to feel broken, just like Strange's hands, and Strange himself. Stephen Strange was a man who'd found purpose, something he was good at. As a surgeon he saved lives, but when a car accident badly damages his hands and robs him of his ability to perform surgery, he's lost. No doubt future trailers will help us put some of the pieces together, fans of the comics will have a pretty good idea of what's going on, although Marvel aren't afraid to change things when it comes to the MCU. Some might say the trailer is underwhelming, but I like the mysterious, broken feel to it. The element of WTF creates intrigue, I know very little about the movie and even less about the comics but I do want to see it. At the end of the day it's a Marvel movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton, there's six reasons to see it right there! Looking beyond this movie and Captain America: Civil War I'm guessing Doctor Strange will appear in Avengers: Infinity Wars, with Martin Freeman in a supporting role in Civil War, will we see Holmes and Watson reunited on the big screen?
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
With over a year to wait for Episode VIII we have got our first glimpse at another story in the Star Wars universe. Before Luke Skywalker could destroy the Death Star, the Rebel Alliance had to know how to destroy it. In order to figure that out they needed a copy of the plans. Rogue One is about Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and her mission to steal the Death Star plans from the Empire. The first trailer is pretty epic, and I'm not talking about the 10 second clip which was the trailer to the first trailer! It gives you a bit of Jyn's background, and glimpses of an AT-AT attack, the construction of the Death Star, the Rebel base on Yavin 4, the new Death Troopers (Storm Troopers in all black - note no comments online about black Storm Troopers this time), Mon Mothma - played by Genevieve O'Reilly who bears a striking resemblence to Caroline Blakiston who played her in Return of the Jedi - briefing Jyn on the mission, a very high ranking Imperial officer (Ben Mendelsohn) wading into...something, a blind Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker limping and a chase that was filmed in Canary Wharf Underground station. Overall it looks like they've really captured the look of the original trilogy and at the same time made a movie that will open up the Star Wars universe, rather than watch the Skywalkers and Solo's build and/or destroy the Empire in one form or another Rogue One will introduce new characters and a new story that links directly to the original trilogy. I find it strange that it has taken this long for this story to be told, especially considering Lucas made the prequel trilogy and sanctioned the Clone Wars series. But with Rogue One's release this December and Episode VIII's release next December, Christmas looks good for the next few years!
