Two 'fixers' show up to the same job, circumstances forcing them to work together. Over the course of the night these two lone wolves will bicker and one-up each other as they attempt to deal with the problem with which they have been tasked. Unfortunately for them, what initially appears to be a fairly standard job, quickly proves to be anything but.
On paper Wolfs looks to be a fairly standard fixer/crime drama. Two professionals, each with their own way of doing things, forced to work together. But writer/director Jon Watts manages to put an amusing spin on this convoluted affair. The man behind the MCU's Spider-Man movies takes what is likely to be a mundane, difficult, and - let's face it - rather grim profession and makes it look exciting. At least to us mere mortals, anyway. Although it is rather funny watching two supposed professionals chase the nearly naked body (Austin Abrams) they're supposed to be disposing of, through the city streets on a freezing cold winter's night. And yet, somehow that ridiculous situation never seems to stretch beyond the realms of possibility. Life, after all, can be just that strange.
Elevating the story even further is the incredible chemistry between stars George Clooney and Brad Pitt. That and their fantastic performances turn Wolfs into a rather thrilling escapade through the Big Apple's criminal underbelly. Not only do the pair bring humour to the awkward central partnership, but also a sense of authenticity. It certainly helps that they look to be genuinely having fun stepping on each other's toes, making it even more hysterical to watch. And when you add Amy Ryan's distressed client and Abrams' confused, naive kid into the mix, things only get funnier. Seeing Ryan's character struggling with her situation whilst watching these two strangers arguing, firstly over who will do the job and then how they will do it, is particularly amusing.
There has, however, been some criticism of Wolfs for being too reliant on the dynamic duo of Clooney and Pitt. That the movie wouldn't be anywhere near as good without them. A slight exaggeration, if you ask me. But is that really such a bad thing? Forgetting for a moment that Jon Watts has created a fun little crime caper - yes it won't exactly keep you guessing, but it is intriguing, well paced, and very funny - isn't it the job of Casting Directors to find the right performer for a role? If said performer then takes the material and makes it even better than it appeared on paper, surely that's a good job all around. Well that is exactly what Clooney and Pitt have done with Wolfs. Under Jon Watts' keen eye, they have taken his fun story of two polar opposites, forced to work together in order to deal with their befuddled and problematic companion, and made it even more so.
The perfect vehicle for an on-screen Clooney/Pitt reunion. Jon Watts' Wolfs is a fun and absorbing comic, crime caper. Made all the more so by the presence of the dynamic duo.
