Normally when I watch a movie (either on the big or small screen) I write a review, share my thoughts on that movie with whoever wants to read it. But given the turmoil of the last year and a half, something which forced cinemas around the world to close their doors, permanently in some cases, it seemed more appropriate to write something about the experience.
After seven months of no cinema, the place never looked so good! The first thing that hit me - apart from the excitement of finally going back to the big screen - was the smell. As I walked in the door of my local Cineworld it was there; the delicious smell of warm popcorn. Even through the mask it was delightfully strong. It was something I hadn't realised I missed, but it felt like a warm welcome.
The feeling of being back in one of those seats, popcorn in hand, was fantastic. For once the adverts seemed to fly by, giving way to the trailers. I was so pleased to be back that even the new Conjuring movie looked good (I am not a fan of horror - Shaun of the Dead is pretty much my level). Then the movie arrived, one I've been waiting to see, and not only for the incredible cast it boasts, but for the shocking tale it depicts. This is a nightmare story, one of hatred, violence and oppression. It also happens to be a true story - which only makes the events it depicts more horrifying - and it's finally available to view on the big screen. I considered watching it at home, but I'm very glad I waited to for it to hit cinemas. This is an important story, one that we all should learn from, and one that should be viewed in our greatest medium, so we can truly appreciate the darkness at its heart.
What impressed me most about my return to the cinema, is that despite all of the measures put in place to combat Covid-19, the place hasn't really changed. Sure we still have to keep our distance (both before and after taking our seats), there are screens on the concession counters, and of course everyone is wearing masks, but none of that intrudes on the enjoyment that comes from seeing a movie on the big screen. If anything, we should be thankful to the staff who have implemented these measures. I genuinely can't say enough about the wonderful staff at my local Cineworld - all of whom have been very welcoming, and seem happy to be back. They have made it possible for us to once again enjoy this beloved pastime.
For many, watching movies is a big part of life. It certainly is for me! I will watch movies pretty much anywhere and on any device; on my TV at home, in my car at a drive-in cinema, on my phone, iPad or computer. But there really is no place like the cinema, and after all of the speculation over closures becoming permanent, I for one am glad to see the doors open, and to be back where movies can be enjoyed at their best.
