Marvel Studios’ Eternals | Moustache Teaser Reaction

The first trailer for Marvel Studios' The Eternals has landed, and while it doesn't give all that much away, it does promise something a little different to what has gone before it. If you haven't seen the trailer or just want to watch it again, you can check it out below.

This trailer leaves me more curious than excited, which in a way feels the wrong way round. Normally I'm just excited to see where the latest Marvel adventure is taking us. It is nice, however, to see an upcoming instalment of the MCU on the horizon that I know next to nothing about.

There really isn't much here to work with. The trailer establishes that these long-living, superpowered beings exist. They have been living on Earth for quite a while - having arrived on a ship that looks like a giant, flying slab of granite - and have influenced but not interfered with humanity in order to see us develop. Oh, and they're not so hidden as to be unaware of what's going on in the world/galaxy. I'm guessing that means they were affected by the snap.

The synopsis doesn't help much either:
Following the events of Avengers: Endgame, an unexpected tragedy forces the Eternals, ancient aliens who have been living on Earth for thousands of years, out of the shadows to reunite against mankind's most ancient enemy, the Deviants.

Who the hell are the Deviants? I hear you say. Well according to the comics they're an offshoot of the same experiment that created the Eternals (in other words, their ugly/evil equivalent), or food for the beings that created the Eternals. Either way, I'm not sure how much of that will translate to the movie. But these Deviants must be some threat for the Eternals to suddenly reveal themselves to the world! After all, they didn't seem all that bothered when Thanos showed up with the power to wipe out half of all life in the universe!

So what else can we surmise from this very vague teaser? Well the visuals are stunning, everything in this trailer is beautifully shot - which could be building up to a reveal of those hideous Deviants. Director Chloé Zhao was able to shoot mostly on location (including England, the Canary Islands, and the US), with little green screen, which certainly explains why it all looks so incredible.

And look at that cast! Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Richard Madden, Kit Harrington and Barry Keoghan. That is a dream cast, if ever I saw one. You could pretty much argue that the movie is worth seeing simply for the cast list. Every actor on that list is capable of great things, and will undoubtedly make a valuable addition to the MCU. It's also worth noting that while most of the characters look pleasant, even caring, Barry Keoghan's 'Druig' looks a tad sinister, and possibly a bit up his own arse. He apparently doesn't agree with the way the Eternals have interacted with humanity, and has withdrawn (which explains that haircut). Could this be a misdirect? Maybe. After all, look what Marvel Studios did with the Skrulls.

Whatever happens with The Eternals, it's great to see a more unknown property coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Several interesting yet mysterious pieces have been revealed here - or at least hinted at - now we just have to wait to see how they fit together... not to mention the rest of the puzzle.

The Eternals is due to hit UK cinemas on 5th November 2021.

The Suicide Squad | Average Guy Movie Review

A new batch of convicts - as well as a few originals - are under the thumb of Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), who's once again offering years off their prison sentences in return for completing a few jobs for Uncle Sam. This time she's sending them to the island nation of Corto Maltese. There they must infiltrate the capital and destroy a top secret research facility. Sounds easy enough. Task Force X is back, and with James Gunn at the helm things are madder than ever! The Guardians of the Galaxy  director has taken what David Ayer started and blown the roof off of it. But he has done so in a way that is respectful of what has gone before. Fans of the original (of which there are apparently few) will have no trouble going from  Suicide Squad  to The Suicide Squad . And yet, the new movie stands quite happily on it's own two feet. Rather than making them drastically different, the returning characters simply feel like they have grown a bit. Well, maybe not grown, but adapted, t

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings | Average Guy Movie Review

For ten years Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) - the son of The Mandarin (Tony Leung), keeper of the Ten Rings - has been running from his past, trying to escape the life his father intended for him. Unfortunately that past has now caught up with him, endangering the lives of those he cares about. Now he must return home, face his father and learn the secrets of his family. If there's one thing that Marvel is good at, it's taking lesser known comic book characters and turning them into major players. Clearly they haven't lost their touch because Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings  is everything fans love about the MCU and so much more. Whilst keeping things very much rooted in this world, Destin Daniel Cretton has carved out a new piece of the epic film franchise - one steeped in asian culture and mythology - to bring us Marvel's first Asian superhero.  It seems insane to think that just a few years ago Simu Liu tweeted Marvel about Shang-Chi, and now he's playing the ne

Operation Market Garden Anniversary 2016

The John Frost Bridge at Arnhem (from my visit in 2013) 72 years ago today, Allied troops set off on what could be one of the boldest missions of World War 2, Operation Market Garden. Developed by Field Marshall Montgomery, the plan was to advance into Nazi occupied Holland and develop a bridgehead over the River Rhine into Germany. There were two parts to the operation: Market (Airborne) Garden (Ground Forces) In what was the largest airborne operation of the war, paratroopers and glider troops had the job of securing bridges at Eindhoven (US 101st Airborne), Nijmegen (US 82nd Airborne) and Arnhem (British 1st Airborne). The ground forces, made up of the British XXX Corp had to advance up a single highway through Holland, linking up with the airborne forces as they went. In honour of the anniversary of Operation Market Garden we look back at some of the movies and TV Shows that tell the story of the Allies ill-fated attempt to end the war by Christmas 1944.
