Day Shift | Average Guy Movie Review

To the uninitiated Bud Jablonski (Jamie Foxx) is a mild mannered pool cleaner, keeping the swimming pools of the San Fernando Valley well chlorinated. But the reality is quite different. Because he's actually a vampire hunter, and on top of dealing with the ever increasing population of blood suckers in Los Angeles, he has just one week to raise enough cash for his daughter's tuition or his ex-wife will move them both to Florida.

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be a vampire hunter? Beyond the cool shades, the fancy weaponry, and the flash car, that is. Does it pay well? Is it even possible to make a living as a vampire hunter? More importantly, is there a union? And if so, do you get dental? If these are questions you have pondered then this may be the movie for you. Either that, or you're just a fan of action comedies, because Day Shift certainly fits that bill. Jamie Foxx sports some very snazzy Hawaiian shirts - as well as some other colourful attire - as he and first time director J.J. Perry deliver the more human side of vampire hunting. In other words it's Blade with a sense of humour... and the joys of parenting. And as directorial debuts go, this is a good one. Despite being more than a tad predictable, Perry has found the right blend of genres to make this action/vampire/horror/buddy comedy a rather fun ride.

The newly minted director's background in stunt coordination means that the action is of high quality too. Everything is brilliantly shot, so that you can savour every beatdown, gunshot and vampire slaying. It's all delightfully over the top and ridiculous, which fits perfectly with the movie's general style - including the buddy comedy and the Twilight references. Foxx and Franco are great together, with the latter thankfully able to make his character annoying only to our hero. We all know that Foxx does cool and action hero very well - he definitely does so here. But he also nails the comedy, and when you add Seth (Franco) into the mix, running around screaming and quite literally pissing his pants while Foxx (and friends) dispatches the undead in style, you get a high degree of hilarity in the carnage.

A scene in which Bud and Seth team up with some other hunters is a particular highlight, as they rain down some serious (but overly stylised) carnage on a hive of the undead. Not to mention an intense car chase featuring an array of crazy vehicles, and cowboy vampire hunter Snoop Dogg armed with a minigun! Moreover, the prey aren't simply there to bite, hiss and scratch. It is a horror/comedy, after all. Karla Souza does a pretty good job as the big evil with plans to reassert her kind's dominance over us mere mortals, despite not getting much to do. However, real creativity has been applied to the legions of bloodsuckers, and their many variants. The spiders are particularly impressive - or should that be horrifying? - given that a lot of it was done for real with contortionists. All in all, if Foxx and Perry were going for exciting, over the top entertainment, they nailed it!

Netflix asks what it's like to be a vampire hunter, and this is what they came up with. It might be more than a tad predictable, but Day Shift is the perfect option if you're looking for an easy/fun watch.

7/10

The Suicide Squad | Average Guy Movie Review

A new batch of convicts - as well as a few originals - are under the thumb of Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), who's once again offering years off their prison sentences in return for completing a few jobs for Uncle Sam. This time she's sending them to the island nation of Corto Maltese. There they must infiltrate the capital and destroy a top secret research facility. Sounds easy enough. Task Force X is back, and with James Gunn at the helm things are madder than ever! The Guardians of the Galaxy  director has taken what David Ayer started and blown the roof off of it. But he has done so in a way that is respectful of what has gone before. Fans of the original (of which there are apparently few) will have no trouble going from  Suicide Squad  to The Suicide Squad . And yet, the new movie stands quite happily on it's own two feet. Rather than making them drastically different, the returning characters simply feel like they have grown a bit. Well, maybe not grown, but adapted, t

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings | Average Guy Movie Review

For ten years Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) - the son of The Mandarin (Tony Leung), keeper of the Ten Rings - has been running from his past, trying to escape the life his father intended for him. Unfortunately that past has now caught up with him, endangering the lives of those he cares about. Now he must return home, face his father and learn the secrets of his family. If there's one thing that Marvel is good at, it's taking lesser known comic book characters and turning them into major players. Clearly they haven't lost their touch because Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings  is everything fans love about the MCU and so much more. Whilst keeping things very much rooted in this world, Destin Daniel Cretton has carved out a new piece of the epic film franchise - one steeped in asian culture and mythology - to bring us Marvel's first Asian superhero.  It seems insane to think that just a few years ago Simu Liu tweeted Marvel about Shang-Chi, and now he's playing the ne

Operation Market Garden Anniversary 2016

The John Frost Bridge at Arnhem (from my visit in 2013) 72 years ago today, Allied troops set off on what could be one of the boldest missions of World War 2, Operation Market Garden. Developed by Field Marshall Montgomery, the plan was to advance into Nazi occupied Holland and develop a bridgehead over the River Rhine into Germany. There were two parts to the operation: Market (Airborne) Garden (Ground Forces) In what was the largest airborne operation of the war, paratroopers and glider troops had the job of securing bridges at Eindhoven (US 101st Airborne), Nijmegen (US 82nd Airborne) and Arnhem (British 1st Airborne). The ground forces, made up of the British XXX Corp had to advance up a single highway through Holland, linking up with the airborne forces as they went. In honour of the anniversary of Operation Market Garden we look back at some of the movies and TV Shows that tell the story of the Allies ill-fated attempt to end the war by Christmas 1944.
