Marvel Studios’ Hawkeye | Moustache Trailer Reaction

It seems that Marvel has come up with a way to get us in the Christmas spirit early, this year. That's right; the trailer for their new show Hawkeye has arrived, and if it's anything to go by, Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) will be bringing the festive cheer.

For me, the announcement of a Hawkeye show was a welcome one. I figured it was about time the most unappreciated Avenger got some love. In fact, I never understood why he is so unappreciated. He's a fun character, and Jeremy Renner plays him brilliantly. I also figured his show would be something of a low key affair, especially when compared to the Marvel shows that have gone before it. So I was delightfully surprised when the trailer arrived and I finally got a glimpse of the merriments to come. After all, what's more festive than a Christmas adventure in New York?

On the face of it Clint is doing his best to lead a better life, making up for lost time with his family and undoubtedly repenting for his sins during those five dark years. Or at least he soon will be when someone who has taken on his Ronin persona appears on the news. Turns out that someone is a young Kate Bush (Hailee Steinfeld). Why she has decided to become a vigilante is unclear, but when the OG Avenger catches up with her, he decides to take her under his wing and help her tidy up the mess she's made. The problem is; the reappearance of Ronin has drawn many of his/her enemies out of the woodwork - some of whom might work for Kate's mum, Eleanor (Vera Farmiga), who is briefly seen in the trailer.

Obviously the action will see the pair take on the underworld with bows and a very cool selection of arrows. Not that this will save Clint from a lot of pain, one rather funny shot sees him covered in ice packs, possibly after a rather high fall. The joys of being a normal guy - albeit an excellent marksman - in a superhero team. But given that this is supposed to be a tad more grounded than some of the fantastical entries in the MCU, they really have nailed that blend of action and hilarity that the MCU is known for. Watch out for the car chase in which our heroes argue over which arrow to use when shooting at the bad guys chasing them.

Interestingly, there are a few absentees from the trailer. For one thing Clint's better half is not seen. She doesn't appear to be in New York when they go out to dinner or to see a musical about the first Captain America on Broadway - what's Christmas without a little panto? We do see Clint on the phone to someone who he calls "babe", so we can assume she's still around. Maybe Linda Cardellini was unavailable. Also not present in this trailer are Florence Pugh's 'Yelena Belova', who we know from Black Widow has been aimed at Clint by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss), and Vincent D'Onofrio, who is said to be reprising his Daredevil role as 'Kingpin'. The latter certainly makes a lot of sense given that the Kingpin quite literally controls all crime in New York, and D'Onofrio's portrayal of Wilson Fisk is nothing short of exemplary. Hopefully this all means Marvel has learned to clamp down on the spoilers.

After only a two minute trailer, I can already say that I love the relationship between Clint and Kate. They have great chemistry. The two archers are hilarious together; her keen overeagerness clashing with his older, wiser exasperation as they seemingly battle every bad guy in New York. It's all perfectly summed up by two moments in the trailer. One in which she claims to be called "the world's greatest archer", and he responds by asking if she's one of the people who calls her that. Given what happens to the bell tower, it's definitely a fair question. The second is simply an expression, an exhale and a look of disappointment on a tied up Hawkeye's face as his wannabe rescuer falls through a skylight and crashes to the floor by his feet. But at least she has a cute dog.

I usually get rather annoyed about having to deal with anything Christmassy before December, but given how good this show looks, I'm willing to make an exception. In fact, I love the festive feel they've brought to Hawkeye's much deserved first solo adventure. Will this become a Christmas tradition, like turkey, presents and Die Hard? Who knows? One thing is for sure, however; Christmas is definitely coming early this year!

Hawkeye will land on Disney+ from 24th November.

The Suicide Squad | Average Guy Movie Review

A new batch of convicts - as well as a few originals - are under the thumb of Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), who's once again offering years off their prison sentences in return for completing a few jobs for Uncle Sam. This time she's sending them to the island nation of Corto Maltese. There they must infiltrate the capital and destroy a top secret research facility. Sounds easy enough. Task Force X is back, and with James Gunn at the helm things are madder than ever! The Guardians of the Galaxy  director has taken what David Ayer started and blown the roof off of it. But he has done so in a way that is respectful of what has gone before. Fans of the original (of which there are apparently few) will have no trouble going from  Suicide Squad  to The Suicide Squad . And yet, the new movie stands quite happily on it's own two feet. Rather than making them drastically different, the returning characters simply feel like they have grown a bit. Well, maybe not grown, but adapted, t

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings | Average Guy Movie Review

For ten years Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) - the son of The Mandarin (Tony Leung), keeper of the Ten Rings - has been running from his past, trying to escape the life his father intended for him. Unfortunately that past has now caught up with him, endangering the lives of those he cares about. Now he must return home, face his father and learn the secrets of his family. If there's one thing that Marvel is good at, it's taking lesser known comic book characters and turning them into major players. Clearly they haven't lost their touch because Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings  is everything fans love about the MCU and so much more. Whilst keeping things very much rooted in this world, Destin Daniel Cretton has carved out a new piece of the epic film franchise - one steeped in asian culture and mythology - to bring us Marvel's first Asian superhero.  It seems insane to think that just a few years ago Simu Liu tweeted Marvel about Shang-Chi, and now he's playing the ne

Operation Market Garden Anniversary 2016

The John Frost Bridge at Arnhem (from my visit in 2013) 72 years ago today, Allied troops set off on what could be one of the boldest missions of World War 2, Operation Market Garden. Developed by Field Marshall Montgomery, the plan was to advance into Nazi occupied Holland and develop a bridgehead over the River Rhine into Germany. There were two parts to the operation: Market (Airborne) Garden (Ground Forces) In what was the largest airborne operation of the war, paratroopers and glider troops had the job of securing bridges at Eindhoven (US 101st Airborne), Nijmegen (US 82nd Airborne) and Arnhem (British 1st Airborne). The ground forces, made up of the British XXX Corp had to advance up a single highway through Holland, linking up with the airborne forces as they went. In honour of the anniversary of Operation Market Garden we look back at some of the movies and TV Shows that tell the story of the Allies ill-fated attempt to end the war by Christmas 1944.
