Anticipated Movies of 2018

2018 is nearly here and with it comes a years worth of highly anticipated movies, here are a few to look forward to:

Molly's Game - 1st January
In his directorial debut, Aaron Sorkin tells the story of Molly Bloom (Jessica Chastain). Bloom - a former Olympic Skier - ran underground poker games for the Hollywood elite, eventually becoming the target of an FBI investigation.

All the Money in the World - 5th January
In 1973 John Paul Getty III - grandson of the wealthiest man on the planet - was kidnapped by the Mafia and held for ransom. But Grandad refused to pay leaving JP III to suffer 5 months of brutal captivity and his mother Gail Harris (Michelle Williams) fighting to bring him home. Her only help, Fletcher Chase (Mark Wahlberg), an ex-CIA Agent working as a Fixer for John Paul Getty I.

Darkest Hour - 12th January
Winston Churchill is brought to life by an almost unrecognisable Gary Oldman. Directed by Joe Wright, Darkest Hour tells the story of Churchill's first 4 weeks in office. During which he must deal with the Dunkirk evacuation and pressure from all sides to strike a deal with Hitler.

The Post - 19th January
Another 70's set - "based on a true story" - drama, The Post follows the events leading up to the release of the leaked Pentagon Papers regarding the war in Vietnam. Meryl Streep stars as Kay Graham, the first female newspaper publisher with Tom Hanks - in his 5th feature film collaboration with Steven Spielberg - playing Ben Bradlee, the editor behind Woodward and Bernstein and their report into the Watergate scandal.

The Commuter - 19th January
Liam Neeson plays a man on his way home from work in his latest action thriller, a role that according to the man himself, reflects his age. In what sounds like Die Hard on a train, Neeson's character gets caught up in a high-stakes whodunnit on - you guessed it - a train.

Early Man - 26th January
In Nick Park's latest stop-motion adventure, a group of cavemen led by Eddie Redmayne's 'Dug' must take on Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston) and his Bronze Age band of Frenchmen in a game of football to save their village.

12 Strong - 26th January
After 9/11, Special Forces were deployed to Afghanistan to hunt Al Qaeda and the Taliban. 12 Strong tells the story of one such squad who thanks to mountainous terrain, fought the Taliban on horseback alongside local Tribesmen.

Den of Thieves - 2nd February
Gerard Butler plays the leader of a Police unit investigating the state's most successful bank robbery crew. At the same time the crew are planning their most ambitious job, the Federal Reserve Bank in Los Angeles.

Black Panther - 12th February
After the events of Captain America: Civil War, T'Challa returns home to Wakanda where he has to adjust to life as King. As if that wasn't enough, he must also face a challenge to his rule by Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan). Working with Killmonger is the man interested in Wakanda's vast supply of Vibranium, Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis).

Red Sparrow - 2nd March
When ballerina Dominika Ergorova (Jennifer Lawrence) is recruited into Russian Intelligence, her first assignment is to seduce a young CIA Agent (Joel Edgerton). The resulting relationship not only threatens the lives of both agents but the security of both nations as well.

7 Days in Entebbe - 9th March
In 1976, an Air France flight was forced to land in Entebbe, Uganda. The passengers were held hostage in order to force the release of imprisoned members of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine - External Operations (PFLP-EO). Directed by José Padilha and starring Rosamund Pike, Daniel Brühl and Eddie Marsan, 7 Days in Entebbe chronicles the negotiations and the Israeli commando raid on the airfield.

Tomb Raider - 16th March
Based on the 2013 video game in which the series was rebooted. A young Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) travels to a remote island off the coast of Japan, the last known destination of her missing Father, Richard (Dominic West). There, she hopes to solve the mystery surrounding his disappearance.

Pacific Rim: Uprising - 23rd March
Ten years after the events of Pacific Rim, the Earth faces a new Kaiju threat. Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) and Jake Pentecost (John Boyega) - son of the late Stacker Pentecost - lead a new generation of Jaeger pilots to defend the human race.

Ready Player One - 30th March
In the year 2045 the Earth is polluted and overpopulated. In order to escape this, many people log into a virtual world called the OASIS. Before he died, OASIS creator James Halliday (Mark Rylance) hid an Easter Egg inside the world as part of his Will. The person who finds this Easter Egg wins control of the OASIS and Halliday's considerable fortune. Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) is one of many players searching for clues, as is Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn) head of Innovative Online Industries, who wants to seize control of the OASIS.

Super Troopers 2 - 20th April
After what seems like a very long wait, the Super Troopers are back, moustaches and all. When a border dispute breaks out between the US and Canada, the boys are tasked with setting up a new Highway Patrol station in the disputed area. Does this mean their time with the Spurbury Police is over?

Avengers: Infinity War - 27th April
In an attempt to conquer the universe and reality itself, Thanos has come to Earth to collect the remaining Infinity Stones. Will the Avengers, along with the Guardians of the Galaxy and a few other powerful friends be able to stop Thanos before it's too late?

Game Night - 4th May
Based on the Agatha Christie novel 'And Then There Were None', a group of friends who meet up for game nights find themselves caught up in a murder mystery.

Solo: A Star Wars Story - 25th May
Despite more director trouble with the Anthology series - Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were replaced by Ron Howard over creative differences with Producer Kathleen Kennedy and Writer Lawrence Kasdan - the next solo adventure (pardon the pun) will hit our screens in 2018. In which, we will see Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) embark on one of their first adventures together, including an encounter with Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover).

Deadpool 2 - 1st June
The merc with the mouth is back, and this time Cable is involved...and some returning characters...hell I have no idea what's going on! Needless to say, I'm very excited about it! Here's what Fox has to say about it:

After surviving a near fatal knee boarding accident, a disfigured guidance counselor (Wade Wilson) struggles to fulfill his dream of becoming Poughkeepsie's most celebrated French Bulldog breeder while also learning to cope with an open relationship. Searching to regain his passion for life, as well as a new stuffed unicorn, Wade must battle ninjas, tight assed metal men, and babysit a group of stereotypical side characters as he journeys around the world to discover the importance of family, friendship, and creative outlets for his very open-minded sex life. He manages to find a new lust for being a do-gooder, a sparkly Hello Kitty backpack, all while earning the coveted coffee mug title of World's Best 4th Wall Breaking Superhero.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - 8th June
When a volcanic eruption threatens to wipe out all life on Isla Nublar, Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) and Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) return to the island to rescue the dinosaurs. In the process they discover a conspiracy that could endanger both humanity and the dinosaurs. In much the same way The Force Awakens resembled A New Hope and Jurassic World resembled Jurassic Park, Fallen Kingdom looks to resemble The Lost World: Jurassic Park. With Dinosaurs being removed from the island and BD Wong and Michael Papajohn reprising their roles from Jurassic World, it'll likely involve developing dinosaurs as weapons for military contracts.

Ocean's Eight - 22nd June
Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) - Danny's estranged sister - assembles a crew to pull off a major heist at New York's annual Met Gala. Matt Damon and Carl Reiner reprise their roles as Linus Caldwell and Saul Bloom.

Ant-Man and the Wasp - 29th June
After the events of Captain America: Civil War (talk about deja vu) Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) attempts to balance being a father with his responsibilities as Ant-Man. At the same time he is approached by Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Hope van Dyne with a new mission, one that involves working with the Wasp to uncover secrets from their past.

Soldado - 29th June
In the follow up to Sicario, Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) and Alejandro (Benicio del Toro) are tasked with eliminating drug cartels smuggling terrorists across the US-Mexico border. Taylor Sheridan is back on writing duties and Stefano Solima (Gomorrah) replaces Denis Villeneuve as director.

Incredibles 2 - 13th July
The Parr family return in the sequel to 2004's The Incredibles. This time Bob (Craig T. Nelson) stays home and takes care of the kids while Helen (Holly Hunter) fights crime as Elastigirl. Along with Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) they take on The Underminer (John Ratzenberger).

Mission: Impossible 6 - 27th July
Currently the plot is unknown. With Rebecca Ferguson and Sean Harris returning as Ilsa Faust and Solomon Lane, it looks to be closely linked to the events of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. Will this movie be worth the major scandal that was Moustache-Gate? Only time will tell.

The Happytime Murders - 17th August

In a world where humans and puppets co-exist, a Private Investigator (Bill Barretta) searches for the serial killer targeting the cast of 80's tv show The Happytime Gang. The Happytime Murders is directed by Brian Henson - son of Jim Henson - and stars Melissa McCarthy, Elizabeth Banks and Maya Rudolph.

Christopher Robin - 17th August
Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends re-enter the life of Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) at a time when he has all but forgotten the Hundred Acre Wood. Christopher Robin is directed by Marc Forster and stars Hayley Atwell as Christopher's wife Evelyn.

The Predator - 3rd August

Shane Black - who played Hawkins in Predator - directs the latest instalment in the Predator franchise. Little is known about the plot other than a group of veterans begin hunting one or more Predators. I'm not sure if this will be any better than the other sequels but that poster does look amazing!

Boy Erased - 28th September (US Release Date)
Based on his memoir, Boy Erased tells the story of Garrard Conley (played by Lucas Hedges). As a teenager Conley was outed as gay to his parents (Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe) who threatened to disown him if he didn't attend a gay-conversion program. There Garrard came into conflict with the head therapist, Victor Sykes (Joel Edgerton). 

Venom - 5th October
Tom Hardy stars as Eddie Brock/Venom in a movie that exists outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe and doesn't feature Spider-Man. It also stars Michelle Williams, is directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) and is rumoured to feature another Spidey symbiote villain; Carnage.

Smallfoot - 5th October
A Yeti called Migo (Channing Tatum) is convinced that "Smallfoots" (humans) really do exist.

The Girl in the Spider's Web - 26th October
In the follow up to David Fincher's 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo', Lisbeth Salander (Claire Foy) and Mikail Blomkvist (Sverrir Gudnason) find themselves caught in a web of spies, cyber criminals and corrupt government officials. Despite its connection to the 2011 movie, Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig and David Fincher are not returning.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix - 2nd November
Set in the 1990's, Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and change her into the Dark Phoenix, forcing the team to choose between Jean's life and that of every other person on Earth. Dark Phoenix follows on from X-Men: Apocalypse, it sees the return of most of that cast and also stars Jessica Chastain in an undisclosed role.

First Man - 2nd November
Ryan Gosling reunites with his La La Land director, Damien Chazelle for 'First Man'. A biopic of Neil Armstrong - the first man on the moon - specifically his life between 1961 and 1969.

Holmes and Watson - 9th November
Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly star in 'Holmes and Watson' as...Holmes and Watson in a humorous take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic mysteries. The movie is directed by Etan Cohen and also stars Rob Brydon as Inspector Lestrade, Kelly MacDonald as Rose Hudson, Ralph Fiennes as Professor Moriarty and Hugh Laurie as Mycroft Holmes.

Creed II - 21st November
It's rumoured that Adonis (Michael B. Jordan) may go toe to toe with the man who killed his father, Ivan Drago (Dolph Lungren) in this follow up to the 2015's Creed. Steven Caple Jr. takes over directing duties from Black Panther director Ryan Coogler. Sylvester Stallone also returns as star and writer.

Aquaman - 21st December
James Wan directs this solo follow up to 2017's Justice League. Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) - the man who "can talk to fish" - must take his rightful place as King of Atlantis in order to keep the peace between those who live on the land and those who live beneath the sea.

Bohemian Rhapsody - 28th December
Rami Malek stars as Freddie Mercury in this story of the legendary rock band, Queen and the years leading up to their appearance at the Live Aid concert in 1985. Bryan Singer was attached as director but was fired 2 weeks before the end of principal photography, he was replaced by Dexter Fletcher.

We'd also like to add a special mention. This year will also see the release of Sandow, a biopic of the famous German body builder - known as the "father of modern body building" - and his young protégée, Launceston Elliot. Sandow is written and directed by Alexander Cooper (producer of Parallel), Cooper also stars as Launceston Elliot. The movie doesn't currently have a set release date, but check back here for updates.
