Moustache Lockdown Streaming Survival Guide Part 13 | WandaVision

Finally the roll out of Phase 4 of the MCU has begun, but not as originally planned. The first to arrive is one of Marvel's new streaming shows - and not the one they planned to debut first. The first two episodes of WandaVision are here, it's the first major Marvel property to be released since Spider-Man: Far From Home back in 2019, and the mysterious show is putting a strange new spin on the Marvel Universe. The MCU is back!

After the events of Avengers: Endgame, it is unknown what has happened to Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). Now we see her living with Vision (Paul Bettany) as a married couple in the suburbs. The only problem is their new life together seems to be a TV show, one resembling classic American sitcoms. And someone is watching. But will they be able to figure out what's going on before it's too late, and more importantly... will they want to?

Of all the new Marvel TV shows that are slated to arrive over the next year or so, WandaVision is definitely one of the strangest - it may even link into "Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness". This is something very new for the MCU, and it's mysterious nature only makes it more gripping. "What the hell is going on?" is a question that may come up on a regular basis. There are a few hints at who may be involved - some more sinister than others - but after the first two episodes it's anybody's guess. Could it be someone is looking to exploit Wanda and her abilities? Maybe the loss of Vision in the Battle of Wakanda was too painful for her, and she lost control, meaning she had to be contained. Or more scarily, did she do this to herself to avoid dealing with her grief? As Loki once said; "I like this game!"

Even without the mystery behind it, WandaVision is a lot of fun. Those who aren't fans of sitcoms may even find themselves drawn into this retro sitcom delight. Olsen and Bettany are fantastic together, they have managed to embrace this new style of acting without losing what made their characters so enjoyable in the first place. The guys at Marvel have gone all out - as they always do - to bring this curious new world to life. Right now it's almost as if Wanda and Vision have been put into Witness Protection, and they're trying to adapt to their new lives, whilst also trying to hide their superpowers. It's a superhero story wrapped in a mystery thriller, wrapped in a sitcom, each layer as interesting and fun as the others. Throw in the hilarious Kathryn Hahn as the nosy neighbour, Agnes, and so far you've got yourself a surprisingly accurate view of life in the suburbs.

Questions have been raised as to where the Marvel Cinematic Universe is headed after the end of Phase 3. For a while now the new TV shows have been the answer to those questions, an exciting new approach for the Marvel Universe. Not to mention something to look forward to, especially with all of the delayed cinematic releases. Well WandaVision is here, and it doesn't disappoint. It's as fun as it is intriguing. Right now I have no idea what is going on with Wanda or Vision, or the strange new world in which they find themselves, and I'm loving it.

WandaVision is available to stream on Disney+.

The Suicide Squad | Average Guy Movie Review

A new batch of convicts - as well as a few originals - are under the thumb of Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), who's once again offering years off their prison sentences in return for completing a few jobs for Uncle Sam. This time she's sending them to the island nation of Corto Maltese. There they must infiltrate the capital and destroy a top secret research facility. Sounds easy enough. Task Force X is back, and with James Gunn at the helm things are madder than ever! The Guardians of the Galaxy  director has taken what David Ayer started and blown the roof off of it. But he has done so in a way that is respectful of what has gone before. Fans of the original (of which there are apparently few) will have no trouble going from  Suicide Squad  to The Suicide Squad . And yet, the new movie stands quite happily on it's own two feet. Rather than making them drastically different, the returning characters simply feel like they have grown a bit. Well, maybe not grown, but adapted, t

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings | Average Guy Movie Review

For ten years Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) - the son of The Mandarin (Tony Leung), keeper of the Ten Rings - has been running from his past, trying to escape the life his father intended for him. Unfortunately that past has now caught up with him, endangering the lives of those he cares about. Now he must return home, face his father and learn the secrets of his family. If there's one thing that Marvel is good at, it's taking lesser known comic book characters and turning them into major players. Clearly they haven't lost their touch because Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings  is everything fans love about the MCU and so much more. Whilst keeping things very much rooted in this world, Destin Daniel Cretton has carved out a new piece of the epic film franchise - one steeped in asian culture and mythology - to bring us Marvel's first Asian superhero.  It seems insane to think that just a few years ago Simu Liu tweeted Marvel about Shang-Chi, and now he's playing the ne

Operation Market Garden Anniversary 2016

The John Frost Bridge at Arnhem (from my visit in 2013) 72 years ago today, Allied troops set off on what could be one of the boldest missions of World War 2, Operation Market Garden. Developed by Field Marshall Montgomery, the plan was to advance into Nazi occupied Holland and develop a bridgehead over the River Rhine into Germany. There were two parts to the operation: Market (Airborne) Garden (Ground Forces) In what was the largest airborne operation of the war, paratroopers and glider troops had the job of securing bridges at Eindhoven (US 101st Airborne), Nijmegen (US 82nd Airborne) and Arnhem (British 1st Airborne). The ground forces, made up of the British XXX Corp had to advance up a single highway through Holland, linking up with the airborne forces as they went. In honour of the anniversary of Operation Market Garden we look back at some of the movies and TV Shows that tell the story of the Allies ill-fated attempt to end the war by Christmas 1944.
