2016 is a big year for DC and Warner Brothers, it's the year where they begin to roll out what's being called the "DC Extended Universe", DC's answer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe or MCU. But is there a problem with Batman v Superman?
It's been three years since Man of Steel hit cinemas, compared to Marvel who get movies out every year and plan to every year up to 2019 this is slow. Granted where Marvel made several origin stories first and then brought the Avengers together DC are using Batman v Superman to unite the Justice League and open up the DCEU. Now, everything I've seen so far suggests that Batman v Superman is going to be a great movie, hopefully the first of many. However, since its announcement there have been a few issues. First there was the negative reaction to Ben Affleck being cast as Batman, something I covered in a previous post. The second trailer didn't go down well with fans either, many believed it gave away too much with the Doomsday reveal and footage of the heroes standing united (presumably against Doomsday). I would personally argue that we already know that these superheroes will join forces but they could have kept Doomsday under wraps. Now Drew McWeeny has spoken on HITFIX of trouble with the film - see the video here: http://www.hitfix.com/the-dartboard/batman-v-superman-could-dcs-entire-slate-be-in-jeopardy-fandemonium
According to McWeeny "this movie is starting to scare them, and I think it's scaring them because they're showing it to people now, people are actually laying eyes on the film and the response has not been exactly what I think they wanted". He goes on to say "I don't think this is going to be the springboard into the Justice League they wanted it to be" and "I've talked to enough people now who have access to the film" but he doesn't mention who these people are and exactly what access they have. He is predicting that Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman will be released as they are as scheduled and that The Justice League Part 1 will be pushed back, with the first Ben Affleck Batman movie taking its 17/11/17 release date. McWeeny also predicts that Zack Snyder will not be directing The Justice League Part 1. It's important to point out that McWeeny hasn't seen Batman v Superman and this is only his speculation.
I think that test audiences and critics have had mixed reactions to the movie and McWeeny has got word of this from someone at Warner Bros. I also know that there's no such thing as bad publicity! This is a perfect way to promote a movie without having to do anything or spend any money. A rumour like this - and at this point it's nothing but a rumour - can only generate more interest in the movie. It's curious that this rumour should surface just over a month before the movie hits cinemas and at the same time the final trailer is released. But none of this really matters, there's an army of fans all over the world waiting to see this movie...all paying customers. Whether this movie is a success or not, fans will still want more! Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is the second movie in the DCEU and will be released in the UK on 25th March 2016.
