This week the first trailer for Paul Feig's Ghostbusters reboot arrived and reactions have been mixed. Granted this is only the first trailer and the movie's release date isn't until July which leaves plenty of time to release more trailers but it's not a great start.
We already know that this movie is a reboot not a sequel yet the trailer begins by reminding us what happened in the first movie. In fact there are several references to the original throughout the trailer. It's a nice tribute to a classic but confusing for those viewing the trailer who know nothing about the movie. For fans of the original it might be annoying to find out it's not a sequel after being led to believe it is.
Now the first trailer is supposed to be a teaser! You're meant to see little snippets of the movie which will generate interest in the movie. But this trailer gives away pretty much an entire scene where Melissa McCarthy is possessed by a ghost and attacks Kate McKinnon. Showing us elements of this is ok, but revealing that Leslie Jones saves them by slapping Melissa McCarthy to break the spell ruins the whole thing because now we know how it ends! I will admit, it was funny watching McCarthy's head go 360 degrees with that creepy grin on her face.
There are good points though. The cast looks good, they seem to work well together. I've heard criticism of the part where McKinnon pretends to be a manakin head (pictured above) but I think it's quite funny. If you were hunting ghosts and you had the opportunity to do it to a colleague/friend...you know you would! All of the ghosts look good, I'm happy to report that Slimer has a part in the new movie. The bonus with ghosts being you don't have to worry about realism, they've got a comic type look which works with the movie.
Overall I'm not impressed by this trailer but I will probably go and see the movie. Regardless of how bad the trailer is, the movie still has the potential to impress. Paul Feig has a string of good movies under his belt and apart from making a remake with a 12A rating he's sticking with his usual recipe. Epic Voice Guy (Jon Bailey) pointed out in his reaction video that it doesn't matter if this movie is bad, we will always have the original!
Looking on Google Images for pictures for this post I found a photo that possibly reveals Ernie Hudson's cameo role (see below). It looks like he plays Leslie Jones' Uncle, the one who owns the car.
