2017 promises an excellent line up of movies, will they live up to expectations? Only time will tell. These are some of my most anticipated movies of 2017:
Assassin's Creed - 1st January
I know it's in cinemas already but it deserves a place on this list. In what could possibly be the first truly successful adaptation of a video game, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the memories of his ancestor Aguilar - a member of a secret society of assassins - thanks to Abstergo, a Templar controlled corporation and their revolutionary technology that unlocks 'genetic memories'.
Live by Night - 13th January
Ben Affleck directs and stars in this crime drama about organised crime in Prohibition Era America and the hunt for the 'American Dream'.
Lion - 20th January
The true story of an Indian boy who loses his family and is adopted by an Australian couple. Years later he uses Google Maps to find his village and make his way home to his family.
Jackie - 20th January
The story of Jacqueline Kennedy (Natalie Portman), First Lady of the United States and her life after the assassination of her husband President John F. Kennedy.
Hacksaw Ridge - 27th January
Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) - a conscientious objector - wanted to serve his country but refused to kill people, despite bullying from fellow soldiers and pressure from superiors. Doss served with the US Army during the Battle of Okinawa and went to win the Medal of Honor for saving the lives of approximately 75 US servicemen.
The Lego Batman Movie - 10th February
Bruce Wayne (Will Arnet) must balance being Batman with raising a young Dick Grayson (Michael Cera). Zach Galifianakis co-stars as the Joker and Billy Dee Williams finally gets to play Two-Face, a role promised to him almost thirty years ago.
John Wick: Chapter 2 - 17th February
John Wick and his new dog are forced out of retirement by a former associate to whom Wick is bound by a blood oath.
The Founder - 17th February
Michael Keaton plays Ray Kroc, the man who turned a single restaurant into one of the most successful fast food franchises in the world.
Patriots Day - 23rd February
An account of the events leading up to and the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013.
Logan - 3rd March
In Hugh Jackman's last performance in his signature role, Wolverine - with the help of an ailing Professor Xavier - has to protect a young girl known as X-23, a clone of Wolverine himself.
Kong: Skull Island - 10th March
In the 1970's a team made up of soldiers, mercenaries and scientists travelled to an island in the Indian Ocean in search of monsters. When they got there, they discovered a lot more than just King Kong.
Ghost in the Shell - 31st March
A cyborg cop (not RoboCop) known as 'The Major' (Scarlett Johansson) investigates a series of attacks on a robotics firm by a dangerous hacker.
Free Fire - 31st March
Boston 1978, an arms deal between two gangs goes bad, the resulting dispute turns into a shootout and a fight for survival.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 - 28th April
The continuing adventures of Starlord and friends. This time round the team are trying to find Starlord's dad. Watch out for Baby Groot.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword - 12th May
Guy Richie brings his own take on the ancient legend to the big screen. Charlie Hunnam stars as King Arthur.
Alien: Covenant - 19th May
The crew of the Covenant discover a distant planet which they mistake for paradise. Ridley Scott directs this follow up to 2012's Prometheus.
Wonder Woman - 2nd June
DC's Amazonian heroine gets her origin story. Set during The Great War, this movie looks like DC's take on Captain America: The First Avenger, Wonder Woman even gets her own Howlin' Commandos. Could this be the movie that saves the DCEU?
The Mummy - 9th June
Tom Cruise stars in this modern day re-imagining of the classic tale and the 1999 movie. Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond's Jaylah) takes on the role of the ancient princess with apocalyptic tendencies. The Mummy is intended to be the first in a series of movies about Universal's classic monsters. I wasn't impressed when I heard they were remaking this movie, but the trailer looks promising.
Spider-Man: Homecoming - 7th July
After the events of Captain America: Civil War, Peter Parker explores what it means to be a superhero and a teenager, with some help from his new friend Tony Stark. Michael Keaton plays Spider-Man's main adversary, Adrian Toomes A.K.A. 'The Vulture'.
Dunkirk - 21st July
Christopher Nolan's epic about Operation Dynamo - the evacuation of British and French troops from France in 1940 - is probably my most anticipated movie of 2017. Starring Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Kenneth Branagh and for some strange reason...Harry Styles, this could be a war movie to rival Saving Private Ryan.
American Made - 25th August
Based on a true story from the 1980's, pilot Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) starts working for the CIA as a drug runner.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle - 29th September
Eggsy and his fellow Kingsmen work their US counterparts - the Statesmen - to take on a new threat.
Blade Runner 2049 - 6th October
Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford star in what could be the most controversial and exciting movie of 2017. Set thirty years after the events of Blade Runner, Gosling's Officer K uncovers a secret that sends him in search of Rick Deckard (Ford).
Thor: Ragnarok - 27th October
Although the plot is unknown at this point, hopefully it will explain Thor and Banner's absence during the events of Civil War. It's been speculated that it's a sort of road trip movie, in which our heroes may be searching for something. That something could be Odin, or it could be an Infinity Stone.
Justice League - 17th November
Batman and Wonder Woman assemble a team of meta-humans to protect the Earth from potential threats. In this case, Steppenwolf is the threat. He's Darkseid's General, both characters were hinted at in the Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman. Steppenwolf will be portrayed by Ciaran Hinds.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi - 15th December
Little is known about the follow up to The Force Awakens. If Adam Driver had his way, we wouldn't even get a trailer, we'd have to wait for the movie to find out what it's about. It's speculated that Episode VIII will revolve around Rey's journey to becoming a Jedi and the continuing struggle of the Resistance against the First Order. Hopefully it will be a fitting tribute to the late, great Carrie Fisher.
Darkest Hour - 29th December
Gary Oldman plays Winston Churchill in the early days of World War 2.
